3	tin
2	Gnus
1	Thoth

G2 is Gravity, I think, a Win app. I hope to God no one is posting from GG
here - vomit. I also use on a daily basis depending on what machine I'm in
front of:

Newswatcher MT (Mac OSX)
Unison (Mac OSX)
NNTP Reader (Android)
Phonews (Android)
Knode (Linux/KDE)
Seamonkey (several OSes) (guess that's Mozilla on the above list)

I use KNode, and it does include headers. :p

Nope, G2 is Google Gropes. :p Gravity identifies itself by its name in
the User-Agent header - or at least, insofar as I've seen it being used.

I take it that this a reference to the famous "Bit Bucket" I've seen
frequent mentions of, which I have yet to clap eyes upon.

Mind you, I've never seen any actual 'write only memory' chips either
- they're invisible, you can see right through them to the sockets
they're plugged into.

'Bit Buckets' and WOM chips are, to my knowledge (and IME), in the
device class described as 'Mythical'. A very useful metaphorical
construct to help visualise 'data flow' in some data processing
systems (notably email and news client software).

Every real computer has write-only memory at /dev/null. Coincidentally,
this doubles as the bit bucket.

I've come across write-only backup tapes too, aka DAT. :-(

Yep. And yet, I never had a 9-track fail on me.

I recall many hassles reading 9-track tapes but it was usually down to
folks claiming they'd sent it at one density when in fact it was another.
Patience usually won.

On my first PC I used tape backup, but the drives all failed (and
were replaced FOC) after 6 months of light domestic use,
rendering irretrievable anything on the tape it failed with.

The failure mode appeared to leave it trying fruitlessly to do
some sort of error recovery, but it just spent hours shuffling
the tape to and fro, until I had to put it out of its misery.

After the fourth, which was a completely new design, I lost all
faith in a backup system which was far less reliable than the
system it was supposedly protecting.

My next system used what was then rather expensive DVD-RAM,
though it worked well, at a time when its capacity was (just)
sufficient.

I used to work in a place with lots of tape drives and fortunately
the DLT-IV drives were very reliable. The few DAT drives were under
maintenance contract and always getting replaced - I couldn't help but
think most of the replacements were refurbished.

That's know as "shoe shining" and is definitely going to wear the heads.

I don't blame you.

When my home DAT drive died DVDs were still expensive so I survived on
CDs until DVD prices dropped.

I hear you. Because of the low quality content - read: posters who
persist in maintaining an uncooperative attitude - in combination with
the repulsive mangling of Usenet posts by Google Groups, I have by now
added most of the newsgroups I'm subscribed to to my Google Groups
filter.

Of course, you do get people who reply to them, and some of them are too
lazy to clean up the ugly mess of empty lines - and they don't trim
anything else either! - and those will then still be visible in my
newsreader, but I generally skip those posts unread.

If they can't be bothered getting a real newsreader and one of the many
available free or affordable news servers, and if their responders can't
be bothered cleaning up the mess they reply to and even further
contribute to that mess, then I myself can't be bothered reading their
stuff. I have my own eyes to take care of, and I'm already susceptible
to ocular migraines from staring at my computer screen as it is.

There's this guy on alt.os.linux who posts via Google Groups and never
cleans up his mess, and refuses to set up a proper newsreader. He
claims that nobody's ever complained about that to him before, even
though we've been complaining about his behavior for over a year
already. Now, earlier today, I saw in one of the quotes in a response
to him - from yet another poster who was vainly trying to convince him
to use a proper newsreader - that the guy announced that he had no
intention whatsoever to start using a real newsreader and that he
intents to continue posting through Google Groups.

I call that extreme egotism, or possibly narcissism. And if a person
like that openly and ostensibly demonstrate an uncooperative
personality, then I see no reason why any other advice given to the guy
would not be wasted on him. So why bother in the first place? The
lurking newbies aren't going to wade through that mess without getting a
headache either, so I rather give my advice to people on whom it won't
be wasted, and I skip the rest.

Sounds harsh, perhaps - and I am normally not a hostile or cynical
person - but there is just such a great amount of utter assholes around
that one has to draw the line somewhere sometimes out of sheer self-
preservation, and I for one have been extending too many people too much
credit already over the years. So I'm drawing my lines now. ;-)

I take a more relaxed attitude with that type of poster. After some
16 years or so of posting to usenet, I've long since learned that it's
a waste of time telling a fuckwit that he's a fuckwit (which is what I
feel like saying after they've taken umbridge when I've bothered to
gently set them straight).

If 'Softly Softly' gets you nowhere, there's just no point in arguing
the toss any further. There's plenty of self absorbed "You can't tell
me what do!" types around, and not all of them are GGers.

Life's just to short to take this shit too seriously afaIac.
