From the «Waiting 'til it goes all the way to 11» department: Title: Microsoft Announces Windows 10 Author: Soulskill Date: Tue, 30 Sep 2014 14:00:00 -0400 Link: http://rss.slashdot.org/~r/Slashdot/slashdot/~3/pG0MRtjcJjg/story01.htm Today at a press conference in San Francisco, Microsoft announced the new version of their flagship operating system, called Windows 10. (Yes, t-e-n. I don't know.) With the new version of the operating system, they'll be unifying the application platform for all devices: desktops, laptops, tablets, and phones. As early leaks showed, the Start Menu is back — it's a hybrid of old and new, combining a list of applications with a small group of resizable tiles that can include widgets. Metro-style apps can now each operate inside their own window. There's a new, multiple-desktop feature, which power users have been demanding for years, and also a feature that lets users easily grab objects from one desktop and transfer it to another. The Technical Preview builds for desktops and laptops will be available tomorrow through the Windows Insider Program. They're requesting feedback from customers. Windows 10 will launch in late 2015. Hmmm... TVTWM circa. 1993-1994, check. (On a SunOS box over 10MB
thinnet to an actual X terminal.)
Fvwm1, circa. 1995-199? , check. (On the same SunOS box, later on
Linux.)
FFvwm2, circa. 199[6-9] to present, check.
Nothing new, provided one does not have one's head so far up MS's ass
that one can't breathe nor see.

Hmm... FvwmPager (shipped with Fvwm2, and I think the functionality
was in Fvwm1's pager as well):
... Dragging mouse button 2 on a miniature view of a window will
cause that window to be move to the location where you release
the mouse button, but your viewport will not change. __If you drag
the window out of the pager and onto your desktop, a full size
image of the window will appear for you to place.__ ...
Nothing at all new here either.

I've use windows from Win2.x days to WinXP, skipped Vista, liked Win7, also used DECwindows, X with Gnome etc over the years, sure they had differences, but generally with time everything improved, and if you could use on, you could use another, I never felt like a fish out of water ... until recently. With win8 I just *had* to have Start8 to make it usable. I recently installed a Gnome 3.12 distro, no more minimize icons as here's nowhere to minimize *to*, what? The activities corner only pops-up half a dozen or so items, beyond that I have to type the name of what I want, why even call it a GUI? The "explorer" (is it still Nautilus?) doesn't let me see my actual folders, just friendly names like My this, My That, My The other for some of them. It really does seem that every "modern" desktop is anti-productive.

Gnome is well known as the posterchild of the "you are a complete moron and an idiot, so we can't let you do that, because you might hurt yourself" line of thought. Just don't use Gnome. For that matter, don't use any "desktop environment". Just load a window manager of your choice (Fvwm2, etc.) and go. With a configurable window manager (i.e., Fvwm2 or others like it) you can decide exactly what you want, configure it, and you've got it. You want a minimize button, add one. You want a button to "shrink" to 1/4 screen size, and position 25 pixels from the left and 35 pixels from the bottom, add one. You want shift + middle click on the right edge of the window border of any window to launch your newsreader, add the function and you have it. You want double click on the bottom left corner of terminal windows to resize the terminal to 80x50, add the function. The possibilities are endless, and guess what, they don't go away with each "upgrade" that comes along.

Granted some of the very early dialogs that exposed every bell and whistle were UI madness, but what's wrong with hiding the "scary" stuff behind an advanced button? I'd even be happy for a secret shibboleet keystroke available on any dialog instead of a visible button). But now, as you say, they've just removed 90% of all customisation, and the party line is "for your own good".

The Gnome developers have a right to implement their vision, and it must be perfect for some people. Myself, I find LXDE close to the sweet spot. Marko

Hiding "scary" stuff, not necessarially wrong, provided there is, as you say, a "secret" button/key to bring up the scary stuff when it is needed. Hiding the "minimize" button.... Just what is scary about the minimize button? > But now, as you say, they've just removed 90% of all customisation, > and the party line is "for your own good". Yep. So, "just say NO to gnome".

Been doing that for years, using twm.

Unless a program itself intervenes in YAaCMaaISWCLYDT mode.
Just installed Slackware 14.1 on a laptop intended for wi-fi use:
+ xterm(1) now iconifies to great fat icons with a logo. Totally
screws up my non-"desktop" desktop layout. Can that be changed
without beating up the source and patching out the relevant code?
As it is, I've reverted to an older version of xterm.
+ Networkmanager(8) won't run unless you have a "taskbar". twm(1)
doesn't have a taskbar. I'm happy with wicd(8) (which will run
in curses mode without a taskbar). But I'm annoyed and
anticipate similar constraints in other apps in the future.
NOTE TO DEVS: don't make taskbar mandatory, see YAaCMaaISWCLYDT,
supra. And don't hard-code big fat icon graphics just to compete for
visual real estate on the desktop.

Thank you, RS. For future reference, be alert for LWatCDR appended to

Very. Problem with natural language: how deep is context dependence?

If you found a bug, please let us know by filling out this form!" There is no form. :-( Perhaps one needs to create an account and login to add new phrases, but when I entered "YAaCMaaISWCLYDT" it prompted me for a meaning, which I gave, and barfed when I clicked on the Continue button. I seem to have a knack of breaking stuff by doing the obvious, perhaps I should become a tester. -- "We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing" -- George Bernard Shaw

No idea with Twm. I run Fvwm, and on my Slack 14.1 system, I've just got all icons turned off, so when I iconify something, no icon appears anywhere. I use Fvwm's build in window list to get back the "iconified" items. > + Networkmanager(8) won't run unless you have a "taskbar". twm(1) > doesn't have a taskbar. Don't use networkmanager, so don't know why it needs a "taskbar".

I should perhaps have made clear that I use Gnome *classic*. I can't
abide Gnome 3 either, it's an abomination. ("Abomination" as declaimed
by Bill Nighy in Underworld.)
