Been doing that for years, using twm.

Unless a program itself intervenes in YAaCMaaISWCLYDT mode.

Just installed Slackware 14.1 on a laptop intended for wi-fi use:

+ xterm(1) now iconifies to great fat icons with a logo. Totally
screws up my non-"desktop" desktop layout. Can that be changed
without beating up the source and patching out the relevant code?
As it is, I've reverted to an older version of xterm.

   + Networkmanager(8) won't run unless you have a "taskbar". twm(1)
doesn't have a taskbar. I'm happy with wicd(8) (which will run
in curses mode without a taskbar). But I'm annoyed and
anticipate similar constraints in other apps in the future.

NOTE TO DEVS: don't make taskbar mandatory, see YAaCMaaISWCLYDT,
supra. And don't hard-code big fat icon graphics just to compete for
visual real estate on the desktop.
