Yeah, since that was drawn nefrobbx has invaded zlfcnpr and most of
the surrounding areas quite effectively and tbbtyrcyhf has appeared in the

I notice the other day on one of those cop shows we seem to have a lot of in
the UK, that Police refer to borderline roadworthy rustbuckets, as Sheds or
sheds on wheels. Anyone know the derivation?

rec.crafts.brewing is still somewhat active, too...possibly not to the same
extent as (for instance) comp.sys.apple2, but I still see legitimate traffic
there from time to time.

If recent traffic or poster numbers are acceptable measures of activity
then have a look at:

http://www.greenend.org.uk/rjk/spoolstats/allgroups.html

Click the column headings to sort. Limited selection of hierarchies,
which isn’t particularly likely to change.

You mean it has comp.* but not alt.*, for example? As for what it reports
within comp I don't know when the list of groups was updated but I saw that
newsgroup

  comp.sys.raspberry-pi

is there. It has to be one of the newest groups in the comp hierarchy. It
was set up on 2 April 2013 and appears in the list so the list is to a
degree current. (It may have all comp groups. I haven't checked.)

My news server honors signed control messages, so it should have all
big-8 groups.

I'm fascinated by this influx from Slashdot back to Usenet! It's very
welcome. Of course, some of us never left but it's good to see others
recognise the appeal of the Usenet mechanism.

I saw some comments that people like the simplicity of the old Usenet
interface and fully agree. Despite its age Usenet has a number of
advantages. In the context of this thread one key benefit is that a single
login id allows access to all groups such as those listed here. IMO another
is that Usenet is non-proprietary.

> This group needs an FAQ anyway, so maybe it should go in there?

I'm not sure what you want to achieve but those of us on alt.os.development
wanted to put a FAQ on a wiki so we set up

  http://aodfaq.wikispaces.com/

We found that to be a better solution than posting a FAQ periodically to the
newsgroup. Now we just post an occasional pointer to the wiki.

That's a good idea. I am thinking back nervously to the "before we get
too entrenched here" discussion but still think we can go elsewhere if
we decide. And I increasingly feel like comp.* addresses have higher
real estate value than alt.* addresses. So assuming we stay at
comp.misc, I took a stab at a quick charter. I saw wikispaces is for
teachers/students and I'm neither so I created it at wikia.com. If
anyone has a better idea, no prob.

URL: http://compmisc.wikia.com

Here's what I wrote. PLEASE resist the urge to suggest corrections on
Usenet. (team editing docs by email is a nightmare but my company does
it all day, every day - makes me want to slit my wrists) :) Please edit
it on the wiki - that's the point of a wiki. My text below is just a
point of departure, so rather than taking umbrance at my first draft,
pull up a keyboard ...

Comp.Misc Charter & FAQ

This document is an introduction to the Usenet comp.misc newsgroup. It
was last updated on 23 Feb 2014.

CHARTER
The comp.misc newsgroup has existed for several decades, but
like much of Usenet, fell into disuse in the early 21st century. In
February 2014, it was somewhat suddenly reinvigorated by a group of
former users of the www.slashdot.org website. Those users had decided
the latest version of the slashdot interface ("beta") inhibited the good
conversation that had made the site so interesting in the first place,
and decided to go congregate somewhere else. With a renewed interest in
and appreciation for Usenet, they decided to make comp.misc their home.

The users of comp.misc hope to make it (again) a site where subjects of
general interest to a technologically-savvy crowd can be posted and
discussed in an ambience of collaboration, respect, and diplomacy. Like
Slashdot and other similar websites over time that have hoped to appeal
to techies, such subject may include but are not limited to:

Operating systems, programming techniques and languages, business
developments in the tech sector, communication protocols, current,
future, and past platforms, protocols, and equipment, mobile
technologies, gadgets, privacy concerns, and websites or services of
potential interest to the community.

In general, the community hopes to avoid, where possible, particularly
devisive or polemic subjects - politics, especially - that would detract
from discussion of the above, and where necessary, to engage in
political debate with tact and diplomacy, recognizing that such debates
(flame wars) have led to the destruction of formerly vibrant Usenet
communities in the past.

FAQs
This group currently has no FAQs, and as it is not dedicated to the
in-depth discussion of any single subject, is unlikely to have them any
time soon.

As you likely know, big 8 groups are much more managed than alt. and
other hierarchies.

In the past, there have been discussions/debates about whether or not
charter modifications of a big 8 hierarchy such as comp. need/deserve a
formal process for charter changes, with the alternative to discussion
being a 'just do it' move with a control message.

The existing comp.misc control messages in
ftp.isc.org/pub/usenet/control/comp/comp.misc.gz

... do not contain a charter per se, but as is commonly the situation
contain only brief descriptions of the group such as that it is
unmoderated and that it is about - General topics about computers not
covered elsewhere.

A discussion about modifications to existing charters (which would
include modifications of non-existent charters which are instead only
brief descriptions) can be seen here
http://www.big-8.org/articles/c/h/a/Charters.html

<snippage thereof>
"A proper charter management system has to be just that, a
system, and it should be separate from the group administration
system."
</snip>

That being said (and the above being referenced), I have no disagreement
with anything you've considered in your draft. I applaud what is going
on here.

Mike - that's useful stuff, thank you. I have lurked on news.admin
groups since about 2012 when I got the dictator.* hierarchy up and
running and have an appreciation for, though not deep understanding of,
the process. They're a well-meaning and thorough bunch of people.

I'm not aware that a charter *system* was ever built, although there was
some consensus one would be useful. But given the nature of NNTP
changes of any nature would be hard to tack onto Usenet. Even now, UTF8
posts break some old servers - imagine.

I've been tempted to post a note to news.admin.<something> about what
we've been up to. This is a good reminder I should do so, and see what
everyone thinks. In my opinion - and it's nothing more than an opinion -
a vote would useful if an existing bunch of users decided to
fundamentally change the purpose of the group they'd all been using. On
the grounds that we've sort of taken over a vacant lot with nothing but
broken bottles and old tires rotting in the weeds, I suspect our case is
a bit different.
