#543 — A comp.misc list of active newsgroups

Fromwjwlsn <ibillwilson@gmail.com>

SubjectA comp.misc list of active newsgroups
Message-ID<8c3a4756-8def-4696-9506-37ab446af87c@googlegroups.com>
Over the past week or so, I've seen many people post about other newsgroups (or hierarchies) that are active. I decided to collect all those I could remember into a list. Perhaps we can find a way to maintain and improve this list? (I'd volunteer to do this manually, but I think there are probably better ways to do this... maybe a wiki page?)

Anyway, feel free to suggest additions/changes, or suggest a good means to allow group ownership and editing of the list. Please note that I'm not trying to send anyone away; I expect you all to come back here frequently! :)

Now, here's the list.

alt.callahans
alt.folklore.computers
alt.fratellibros
alt.survival
cakewalk.audio
comp.editors
comp.lang.c++
comp.lang.python
comp.mail.mutt
comp.mail.pine
comp.mobile.android
comp.os.linux.advocacy
comp.os.linux.misc
comp.os.vms
comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.*
comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.action
comp.sys.mac.*
comp.sys.mac.vintage
comp.text.tex
comp.unix.shell
news.software.readers
rec.food.cooking
rec.games.frp.dnd
rec.games.pinball
rec.radio.amateur.*
sci.electronics.repair
soc.genealogy.*
soc.history.*

Note: in a couple of cases, I've listed a hierarchy and a single group in that hierarchy. That's because particular groups were singled out as being active and/or useful, whereas hierarchies might require some exploration to figure out which groups are worth your time.

Thanks for your post. I think that the best way might be to just add
to the list here on comp.misc - that way there's no extra
infrastructure needed.

If people would insert their additions in alphabetical order and
re-post the whole list, that would probably be an excellent move as it
would make periodic re-posting of the list easy. I'm not sure how long
articles are retained for everybody but reposting the list every few
months might be good. Hopefully the list expands over time - I have
personally brought a few buddies back onto Usenet in just the past few
months so I know it's possible. Spread the word! I've made a minor
addition or two below.

There are dozens of active groups in the uk.* hierarchy. In particular,
uk.d-i-y, uk.rec.sheds, uk.legal.moderated, uk.comp.sys.mac and
uk.radio.amateur. There's much drama often happening in uk.net.news.*
too...

Interesting group. What is the origin of the word 'gricer?'

The unfortunate answer is nobody really knows for sure. It dates from at
least the early C20th, possibly earlier, but the exact source is unclear.

That's a new one for me - going to check it out! This is fun.

I feel obliged to self-interestedly put in a plug for the hierarchy I
manage, dictator.*. It consists of 8 text-only groups, and the topic is
bad governance, autocracy, and tyranny. It's not an old Usenet group
that is still running, it was created in June 2012 and has been
spam-free and on-topic two years and 2000+ posts later. Unfortunately,
not all NSPs carry the hierarchy: Individual.net, Eternal-September, and
AIOE all do not, and I've been unable to convince them to do so.
Albasani, Weretis, Solani, BlueWorldHosting, and most Dutch and German
NSPs do.

It's a private hierarchy, so it's not subject to the board management
model that the rest of the Big-8 are, and the newsgroup structure isn't
going to change, so there's not much management to do. The hard part -
and it is an advantage of Usenet - is that first you have to get other
news admins to peer with you so the articles propagate; then you have to
convince NSPs to carry your hierarchy. That second task is tough. But
once your articles are propagating, the techncal part of managing a
hierarchy is not that hard. I think running an NSP (log ins, user
support, etc.) is a hell of a lot harder. Have a look at
www.dictatorshandbook.net to see more about the subject matter on those
8 groups.

Asking questions of Herr Dictator is counter-revolutionary. You and your
family must report immediately to your Local Area Co-Ordinator for
political re-education.

What's to manage? He didnt' say they were moderated newsgroups.

It's no wonder newsservers dont' want it, it's a local type naming without
relationship to any locale. Apparently alt. wasn't good enough, he wanted
yet another hierarchy, that has as much clout as alt.

Actually, many NSPs have taken on the dictator.* hierarchy. Say what
you will about clout, it has a better signal-to-noise ratio than many
groups. And the reputation of the alt.* hierarchy is poor enough I
thought it was better to start fresh. But thanks for your enthusiasm
anyway.

Gricer means a trainspotter - but more so.
There is an anecdote that suggests it comes from the word 'grouse'.

The sci.logic and sci.physics.relativity groups are also very active.

With the sci.physics.relativity group, the problem is that it would take
a lifetime to figure out who are the crackpots and who really knows what
they are talking about. In some cases it is straightforward, but in some
discussions it is really hard because everybody accuses everybody else of
being an idiot or worse.

Cool, I added those in along with a few others... including comp.misc. just in case this list gets copied somewhere else.

alt.philosophy is active too, but is pretty full of
zealots and crazies. Ditto for alt.atheism and a good
number in the same vein. They'll be flaming each other
until the fourth coming of Bob Dobbs.

Cool idea. There's many of us who have come back after a hiatus.
