The Web UI could provide the colors, animated ads, bells and whistles for those who prefer it. It could also maintain a reputation and rating system. At the same time it would seamlessly integrate with comp.misc so you wouldn't depend on a single server and account. Marko

It may be worthy to open an account there if so.

Although the color palette is dreadful, it doesn't seem to update often enough, and the floating panels make it unusable on a phone. Ugh!

There is an update coming soon that will turn off the "add-this" panel for logged in users, and let you optionally hide the settings panel. ~tdk -- View this thread at http://squte.com/node/4459#comment-10516

It works for all newsgroups, you can comment directly on that site or via newsreader. When you comment on that site you would have to get a usenet account for which you would upload your own credentials if you want your comments mirrored to usenet. If you are content discussing on that site, you don't need that. > > Although the color palette is dreadful, it doesn't seem to update often > enough, and the floating panels make it unusable on a phone. Ugh! I don't have much problems with it. Actually I don't know of any decent newsreader for phones, so this looks like a viable alternative for me. The owner of the site is quite active in this group as well (tdk) and will probably listen to improvement ideas, even though he will probably not take every advice. Br, Elvis -- Trolling is a art! I thought everybody was trying to figure out how to make all of the awful web based forums accessable through a nice newsreader where you can dictate the format yourself, and just link to the content. Newsreaders are platform agnostic, and can even work on mobile. -- Lance Orner (lance@orner.net)

I'm happy with Usenet, you're happy with Usenet. However, even among the "nerds," the vast majority seem to be yearning for the golden cage. Marko

> how to make all of the awful web based forums accessable through a nice newsreader Well most forums offer an rss feed, and there are rss readers for mobile You could have an rss to Usenet portal, similar to gmane but there might be copyright problems. See [1] for a proposal to build a Usenet-like system that will be available on forums and also through an app. [1] "http://squte.com/communion-network" ~tdk -- View this thread at http://squte.com/node/4459#comment-10610

Or don't treat usenet as some private club, and come and participate in
the other newsgroups. Do it because you're interested in the topic
there, and then having some mention of this in your .sig will propagate
the idea, without actually spamming the newsgroups.
Usenet needs more people to participate than it does carpetbaggers taking
over one unused newsgroup because the website they've invested in so much
has incremented its level of commerciality.

Michael - You seem overly invested in protecting this Usenet group for
the people who were using it prior to February 2014. Here's who those
people are, and what they were posting:
xxxxxx videolaR 80 FAZLA super, by garch20@gmail.com (8/10/2013), no
responses
what is internet?, by jawad.cs43@gmail.com, (9/21/2013), 1 bot response
Re: Hello from the year 2013!!, patricklange1983@gmail.com (10/19), no
response
{arabic} emarketing, Nabil Alnihari (12/26/2013), no responses
Re: I/S Chargeback Software, by drivan32@gmail.com, no responses.
We have yet to hear a single word from Mssrs drivan, vinodk81, Nabil,
lange, jawad, or garch20, and every one of those posts smells of
robo-posting by a spambot. I applaud you for your defense of these
software posters. Carpetbagger is a strong word, incommensurate in my
opinion with the actions of folks who seem love and appreciate Usenet as
much as you do.
If the original "users" of this newsgroup speak up and tell the rest of
us to piss off, I suspect we'd do so. Rather, there was nothing but
crickets and tumbleweeds around here, and we've made it into something
interesting that you are welcome to participate in. If you intend
rather to post all this negative "Usenet was better before all you 'new
guys' showed up" stuff, I for one will be killfiling you. There's a
better than average chance the folks posting to comp.misc today are as
old as you or older, and have every right to consider themselves
"original users" of comp.misc.
If you feel otherwise, I'd invite you to go contact Mssrs drivan,
vinodk81, Nabil, lange, jawad, or garch20 on our behalf and see what
they think. They may have some e-marketing advice for you, too.

Just for a lark, I logged into this group via blocknews, a NSP that has retention back to 2009. Nothing but robospam posts from 2009 until February of this year. <crickets> chirp, chirp, chirp </crickets>. It occurs to me too that this site is a fantastic gateway drug: people not familiar with Usenet land here, find a healthy community pointing them to other interesting groups in other topics. And they explore and learn. Maybe that pisses off the oldies. Or maybe we oldies rejoice in the fact that new people come to enjoy something we think is valuable.

While he was way over the line in his tone and most of his points, he was right in the fact that some crossposting would be a good idea. If only to increase visibility of certain threads towards groups which might provide additional insight, making this group even more interesting to read. -- Andy

Funny you should mention that; I was just thinking of a new idea. There was a pretty good discussion on crossposting here earlier and most people - and me too - are against it. I think crossposting often leads to parallel discussions and is annoying. But I was thinking - as you are, apparently - that Michael was right that, for example, there are good groups dedicated to things like VMS or Perl or Emacs and it would be interesting to benefit from the knowledge of the folks in those groups. My proposal - curious to see if anyone objects - is to post the general comp stuff here, stuff for which no dedicated newsgroup exists. But when there's a better group, to post it there and post a 'flag' here. Let's say there's a good article about emacs (not a hypothetical question, just saw one on Hacker News today). I post it in comp.emacs, and then in comp.misc simply post a flag stating the article's title and in which group it was posted. One neat thing about Usenet is that there are so many dedicated groups out there. That same thing can be a weakness in that it's useful to have a place like this (or misc.news.scitech, cough cough) where people interested in all or any of those specific topics can meet, and where stuff that's more general and not necessarily germane to another particular group can be alerted to the discussion. What do you think? There was a good thread that led to a collection of good tech-related groups. If everyone wants to give this a try, that's probably the list of groups with which I'd start.
