Why does it take fifteen clicks to order a burger, but only a single enter character to submit a partly completed letter to the government? Sylvia.

Gov't system was written in the x0's, when you practically had a doctorate in mathematics / computer science in order to write the program. As opposed to the cheapest "dev(tm)" who took 14 months and untold thousands to re-invent a basic UI. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQEzBAEBCAAdFiEEBcqaUD8uEzVNxUrujhHd8xJ5ooEFAlzgEioACgkQjhHd8xJ5 ooEXRAf/e4ryDDz+Td52EDtXdSGIrNuantKGTrdUezUVD/CTEzmXtmlgWyvR+4fW QPVPRq6wrHX60pvsbrUUlTOwna7Rzkl7BT0pKBBOQsTUWaXxM8a4rvVyT+Hbo8wK av3flOzXoUvbla21t7qaK+yn967OCaBl+QGmokWZVBwhL09GYJR3KdadzTVxdIv0 GeEGAe7fDbzIMLjdgN/tUgscjSqY1Xt+d1CKilQ0/6GvVPP9ar2v3L292vlPkdFI rgUp+AYqERzk1U6RUgNiW/h2cE6oGIAdlKW0tJFCKll6ddFKfYlB7QXj8wLbfTkt qx/QU5mFtW4SX7uPgXBalpgxzrCbWQ== =gz+F -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- -- |_|O|_| |_|_|O| Github: https://github.com/dpurgert |O|O|O| PGP: 05CA 9A50 3F2E 1335 4DC5 4AEE 8E11 DDF3 1279 A281

Because the McDonalds marketing department has determined that the additional "engagement" provided by the fifteen clicks produces more up-sell opportunities (i.e., advertising) that, they believe, result in a higher net sale vs. the one-click model, and so to increase profit, fifteen clicks it is.

Any day now, web design will be done or at least managed by neural nets. There will be, say, 2500 input units representing any feature, element or factor that the neural net guys can distinguish. After training, the answer to this or any similar "why" question will be embodied in the 2500 x N matrix of weights (and similar for multiple layers). No human will *ever* be able to determine "why" the resulting pages are as they come to be except that they generate more juice. (viz. profit, clicks, eyeballs, gross sales or whatever target they were trained on.) All those 20-something web designers from the naughties we've come to hate will 40-somethings but off the hook for responsibility. They may also be unemployed. -- Mike Spencer Nova Scotia, Canada

That'll be the capitalism that provides you with everything you eat,
wear, own, live in, drive, need to post to Usenet, drink and doubtless
many other things I've forgotten.
