   significantly as a combined entity," he said. "We're also excited about

Sounds little better than Dice.  A web media company - more of the
 same.  I'd think the value of both sourceforge and slashdot are
 dropping with each transaction.

My cynical view is that DHI Group couldn't manage to make the
anticipated returns, and both brands have probably gone down a bit in
value due to slashdot beta and sourceforge malware.  So they're
getting shot of it.

Will the new owners do any better?  IMO, only if they realise that
slashdot has two key differentiators: the informed readership and the
comment moderation system.  Nowadays I only go there to read the
comments on news stories I've already read elsewhere.

Nowadays if I go there, most stories are ones I read about elsewhere 
several days earlier, in the unlikely event I feel like commenting I'm 
mostly an AC anyway.

Me, I went to soylentnews.org, and to a lesser extent to this newsgroup.
And I've never looked back.

I wonder if this effect is why /. is being sold.  The 'exodus' due to
"beta" resulted in a sufficient drop in traffic that Dice was not able
to profit to the extent they wished.  And as a result, they are simply
dropping it onto someone else.

Isn't SourceForge the former VALinux? I keep thinking someone should
take another stab at being a large, Linux hardware company. I guess this
is the end of it entirely now.

Sadly, the informed readership is mostly gone.  Not sure if it's a
demographic thing, smart people shifting elsewhere, or the effect of a
younger generation mostly accessing Slashdot on a cellphone with limited
time/attention, a poor, touchscreen keyboard, and a small resolution.

These days the comments are more often pathethic.  Shame, as I used to
go there to learn, and learned so much by reading smart people's posts. 

Hackernews is better for high quality, tech comments these days.
Slashdot has the intellectual level of Reddit.

And Usenet remains pretty darned awesome.
