Not sure if it's a demographic thing, smart people shifting elsewhere, or the effect of a younger generation mostly accessing Slashdot on a cellphone with limited time/attention, a poor, touchscreen keyboard, and a small resolution. These days the comments are more often pathethic. Shame, as I used to go there to learn, and learned so much by reading smart people's posts. Hackernews is better for high quality, tech comments these days. Slashdot has the intellectual level of Reddit. And Usenet remains pretty darned awesome.
