Couldn't agree more. I've not "upgraded" from Ubuntu 10.04LTS for this very
reason, and am presently looking round for a "traditional desktop
metaphor" distro to upgrade to. Mint, probably.

Yeah on another Fedora box, I use LXDE which is sufficiently gnome2-like, especially considering it boots into a full-screen TV interface, LXDE is just used for the odd bit of tweaking. On a new centOS7 box it does have gnome3, but is far enough behind the curve to still have a task bar and a start menu.

Slackware 14.1 with Fvwm2??? Or, you have the option of Xfce as well on Slackware 14.1.

Yep, desktops and the pager have been in Fvwm (both versions) for a very long time. I find the easiest way to move windows to desks or pages is to make the window sticky. Once you've done that, the window is shown on all pages/desks, so you simply move to the location you want to drop the window and "unstick" it. I'm a stickler for the window manager NOT putting things on the screen I don't want. So, I run without a visible pager or taskbar. I just use hot keys to get where I want. I also designate certain windows to only start on a specific page. We'll see how much of this technology gets into windows. I somehow doubt they'll get all the necessary pieces. -- Dan Espen

Maybe post it somewhere? Do you do it all through fvwm2?

To stick a window: Assuming you have a "Window-Ops" menu, add this: AddToMenu Window-Ops "%mini.stick.xpm%(Un)Stic&k" Stick Of course you can bind that to anything, including a new button on the window. To confine a window on a page/desk use function "PageR": DestroyFunc PageR AddToFunc PageR I Style "$0" StartsOnPage $1 $2 $3, SkipMapping, RandomPlacement This puts browsers one page down and music players one down, one over: # desk/x/y PageR Seamonkey-bin 0 0 1 PageR Netscape 0 0 1 PageR Mozilla* 0 0 1 PageR xmms 0 1 1 PageR Audacious* 0 1 1 PageR Ryhthmbox* 0 1 1 PageR Music* 0 1 1 -- Dan Espen

Just seen on Twitter:
Microsoft dev here, the internal rumours are that early
testing revealed just how many third party products that
had code of the form
if(version.StartsWith("Windows 9"))
{/* 95 and 98 */
} else {
and that this was the pragmatic solution to avoid that.
