I've certainly used Linux before, I had a brief toy with Ubuntu on an old
laptop a couple of years ago. Didn't go much on it, to be honest, although
I know I only just scratched the surface of the thing. I have a long parked
project to get a Linux install working on one of my PowerMac 9600s, must
get round to that soon. No, what got me excited about Bob's post was the
thought of being a nerd for 3 years, playing with computers and not having
any other responsibilities. If I had the money, I'd permanently be enrolled
on university degree courses, one after the other. :)

Most of ours do it for four years...they do a year working in industry,
too (getting paid for it). We have students at IBM, HP, Microsoft, Red
Bull, Glaxo....and in Hong Kong at HSBC. We even have about 18 at Cisco
in San Jose this year...

That does sound really great, Bob, I imagine you produce a lot of very
talented graduates. Does UoK actively find placements for the students or
is it left to them to figure out on their own?

I thoroughly enjoyed my photography degree, started a decade after I jacked
skool in when I was young and stupid, and wanted (still do) to do a
photography MA to spend a couple more years embraced in the bosom of higher
education. Like I said, given half a chance I'd be a student for the rest
of my life, great times and much more fun than the "real world".

What you prefer is of no consequence.

I wasn't suggesting that it was, merely stating my preference.

Bloody Nora, mate. Give it a rest. I was saying that I prefer the sound of
"UoK" to "UKC". Nothing more, nothing less. I wasn't for one moment saying
that my preference makes a jot of difference, nor that it could possibly
influence the accepted convention to use "UKC".

"Huge," what Stephen Thomas Cole wrote was perfectly clear and
understandable. It seems obvious you are trying hard to incite a
classic Usenet flamewar with your curt, offensive responses.
Unfortunately for you, the rest of us are too smart to take your bait.
Have a look at your own question, then.

And wrong. (I should point out at this point that I am a *graduate* of
UKC.) STC may want to behave like Humpty-Dumpty, and he is most welcome
so to do, but IME if you want to talk to people about a subject, it's
generally a good idea to use the correct terminology.

Umm, no. And if you had any experience with Stephen, you'd know that many
of the points raised about him by an earlier poster are actually correct.

Stephen is also a nym-shifter, nearly always good evidence of troll-hood.

I've had no experience with either of you on other
newsgroups, and my opinion of both of you has been mostly shaped by
your contributions to comp.misc. This place is more fun when we're
talking about tech instead of other contributors. That's my last word
on the subject.

Your earlier suggestion that Huge is looking to incite a flamewar is
seeming quite accurate. I've no interest in getting embroiled in one here,
so I'll not feed the troll any further.

Not having been a student at UKC (I earned my degree at UCA), I was
unfamiliar with the preferred colloquialism of said institution. I regret
that my ignorance has upset you so.

No comment to add here other to say that I was unaware you were of the same
obsessed bent of mind as Hils. A shame, really, as I regarded you as not a
bad egg.

What evidence? Seeing as I have not posted under any identity than my own,
there cannot be any. You're simply repeating baseless accusations from the

Not any more, officially. Because it now has two marts, UKC and UKM
(University of Kent at Medway). I'm giving a course there (Medway) next
week!

(two parts, that should have read, i.e. two campuses). Us old timers
still talk about UKC as the 'real' one, mind.

We have a departmental placement office, staffed by two experienced
careers/graduate recruitment people (unusual, even within UoK). They
provide steering to apply for the right jobs, but they are all applied fo
compettitively (competition can be worldwide sometimes). Students can
also suggest suitable placements (one went to work for a relative in
Delhi).

Salaries range from about £12000 for the year (East Kent) to £52000 (a
certain bank). This is for a single placement year.

Some of the jobs are really interesting. Some of the Cisco people worked
on OpenStack, for example. I mention that to keep this vaguely on-topic.

We had a number of Indians working at Dante. They all seemed to have
come from UoK.
