That's cool! > Any good ISP in the old days would keep out most of the spam. Any ISP that still carries the newsgroups is likely to keep out the spam. I might point out that some of those for profit news providers exist because there is demand for the binary newsgroups, all that illegal file sharing. A bloat on Usenet (and by some, the reason some ISPs started dropping Usenet), if people come for the binaries then they aren't likely here for the discussion. Binary newsgroups made sense in the early days, when the messages were passed over phone lines and those with access to Usenet might not have access to other things online, so having binary newsgroups meant a method of distributing the software needed for Usenet. But once the internet became accessible/popular just about anyone with access to usenet had access to a webpage or an ftp site, or whatever. That's the efficient way to pass large files, only when needed. Put a binary file into usenet, and every site that carries that newsgroup has to allocate space for that message, and every site that carries the newsgroup has to actually retrieve the message. If nobody is making use of that binary file, then it's all a waste. If it's on some server and grabbed as needed, the only traffic is when someone wanting it grabs it. SO the binary newsgroups are wasteful, and help to give usenet a bad name. Michael

I think if people work at it (thanks to xyzzy so far) we can have a more useful 'News for Nerds, Stuff that Matters' than anywhere else. By the way, I was RocketRabbit but now I eviscerate animals and predict the future from their entrails, here in sunny Oregon. Now to post a news item or two - I will try to post something original, and something interesting ripped from Slashdot, and if we do this together we can not only replicate the interesting topics here, but draw new faces too. Spread the word! I have been modded down and / or 'Funny' recently, but it's important that you all burn all that karma and tell people about comp.misc, Eternal September, and give them some news reader options and / or point them to https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/comp.misc for ease of use. Thanks and - FUCK BETA!

No one on Slashdot seems to be interested in any way, shape, or form in proposing it as a substitue/replacement for Slashdot. Too bad, Malda. Your audience is different now.

This sums it up: Slashdot's owners view the Slashdot readers as an audience. Not a community. In other words, the Slashdot audience should sit and just accept whatever they are shown, as if they are watching the TV. Makes you wonder if Dice even knows what it purchased?

Umm, Malda left Slashdot years ago. While he is welcome to express an opinion, that is all it would be, since he bears no responsibilty for the beta. He may not have even been aware how upset the community was about the change or may be witholding comment in respect for friends still working there (or to give them a chance to formulate a reasonable reply). The audience has made their feelings quite clear; there's no need for Malda to add fuel to the fire. >This sums it up: Slashdot's owners view the Slashdot readers as an >audience. Not a community. In other words, the Slashdot audience >should sit and just accept whatever they are shown, as if they are >watching the TV. >Makes you wonder if Dice even knows what it purchased? Quite possibly not. Watch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YnVeysllPDI There is a difference between redesigning a "corporate" website and a community website, and not all designers really understand that, even when they have the best of intentions (whether Dice had "best intentions" is debatable, but should not be entirely ruled out). Most of Dice's sites are uni-directional; Dice (or its subsidiaries) feed information to the users. They may not have understood how connected the Slashdot community feels to the current design. Still, we need to give Dice some time. As many of us probably know, unlike individually owned websites, corporations do not turn on a dime. There's too much ego, politics and money involved. When Malda ran things, he could have made a comment after a few hours and reverted in day. That doesn't happen in the corporate world. /MEETINGS/ will be required. Legal, marketing and finance will need to chime in. New plans will have to be drawn up and approved. And it all has to be done without admitting they did anything wrong (because that would devalue the company). So I recommend patience. Keep some of the pressure on so they don't think the problem has blown over, but at the same time don't expect an immediate u-turn on Dice's part. I recommend polite emails sent to feedback@slashdot.org (apparently people /do/ read those response). Hopefully Dice will come up with a better explanation of their intent within a week and a new plan or proposal before the end of February. After that, play it by ear. If they don't respond (or their response is still more of the same canned corporatese like we got on February 6) then I think that will be a clear sign as to how Dice feels about the community. But I hope by then they will recognize their mistake, come to understand the importance and value of its current readership, and begin to engage with them so that a suitable middle-ground can be found between what Dice needs financially and what its audience wants from Slashdot.

I guess I was thinking, it was his baby and he put a lot of heart and soul into it, and probably has an opinion about so many angry/rabid Slashdotters venting their spleens in the comment sections. Maybe he agrees and his strategy is to stay away from the maelstrom. Or maybe he's signed some agreement not to participate in the forums effective the day he departed. Either way, I'm curious to know what he's thinking about it, or if he's even aware.

I'm amazed this got covered by the Washington Post. I'm amazed Malda seems to not realize the seriousness of the changes and the backlash this time. And finally, I'm amazed he doesn't seem to understand that part of the backlash is leftover anger from the last couple of redesigns. So, that answers my question. His new baby is is that new iOS app he's working on, and he's not paying attention. As a retirement strategy, that's a good one, I guess.

The current caretakers of >Slashdot need to balance the needs of all users with their limited >engineering resources, Malda argues -- noting wryly, "It ain't easy." ' Except - what Malda didn't seem to notice - is that in those previous design changes, there were voices either in favor of the updates or moderates speaking up in support of Slashdot even if they didn't like the new look. Nobody likes Beta, it seems, except for Dice ;-) Of course, this goes again to the whole idea of how a community-driven site differs from a regular corporate site. People feel very attached to the place, and - because it is often their content which the main draw - also feel some ownership. The actual owners of the site mess with this at their peril. It's worse because the beta redesign doesn't seem to add anything useful to the site for the current audience. Rather, it diminishes the community's importance by making the comments less visible and functional and changes the overall spirit of the site. On the other hand, adding subscriptions - to use Malda's own example - had obvious benefits even if it wasn't to everyone's liking. While I agree the "fuckbeta" movement is a bit strident and childish, it also is a clear message that the current audience is very unhappy with the redesign and I hope it continues. But at the same time, we need to have a little patience because it will take a while for the message to percolate its way up to those who can authorize a change, and then even more time for those changes to be implemented.

Also... for some reason there exists a /r/slashdot on reddit (I really don't know why), which was previously inactive for about a year... but now has a few posts about the situation. http://www.reddit.com/r/slashdot
