At the end of the Slashcott, and a half-assed second week, Slashdot is still standing, Soylent is up and running, and Perens' Technocrat is on its feet. I find myself hoping all three stick around - more articles for all of us, or maybe I just like the fight. In any case, I've given up being mad at Dice: they can do what they want with their site, and I might even continue visiting it if they post interesting stuff. Here's a quick look at comments: (it's column-aligned in fixed width font). Soylent: Intel 15 core CPU: 15 comments Snowden interview: 8 comments Computer chess: 24 comments EULA Forestation: 20 comments Slashdot: Microsoft price cut: 51 comments Gmail unsubscribe tool: 41 comments Megatons to Megawatts: 66 comments Technocrat: Safari broken: 1 comment California: 6 comments ACs and Broken Windows: 8 comments Groklaw: 10 comments At a glance I'd say Slashdot has been impacted by the exodus, but still has somewhat healthy commentary going. Soylent has got a respectable amount of comments, but some of them are pretty weak. Technocrat is struggling to get anyone to read it, and too many articles are about Perens' software, which sure seems to be alpha-quality at this point. He's off to a losing start. Like I said, the reader potentially wins in that there are more articles being posted. Soylent does seem to have quickly built up a community, which works in its favor. Perens seems not to have done the same. Like I said, I'm no longer hoping for Dice's demise - let's keep the competition going!

One thing that Perens needs to make clear is what Technocrat's editorial policy is going to be. For instance, will editors be deleting posts, and if so, under what circumstances? The same question holds for censoring of text within posts... especially since this has happened at least once already: http://technocrat.net/dynamic/comment/103 I get what he's trying to do with the site (i.e., reward "good" behaviour, penalize "bad" behaviour, etc.), but I really wonder if his policies will lead to the "polite and insightful community" he's trying to foster, or if it will just kill the site before it has a chance to really take off. -- Now frequenting comp.misc daily in a prolonged fit of netstalgia.

The developer started from scratch with up-to-date technology and has been able to accomplish a lot very quickly. When I first looked at pipedot a week ago, it was mostly static... but it now has a functioning submission, reply, and threading system. All it really needs now is karma and moderation. If you haven't checked it out yet, you should... it looks promising. It will be interesting to see if a clean and modern codebase can propel it past SoylentNews. -- Now frequenting comp.misc daily in a prolonged fit of netstalgia.

And I'm impressed! Visually it's nicer than Soylent, and the idea of a code rewrite that preserves slashcode functionality but builds it on PHP and CSS is appealing. I'm going to subscribe to it as well, to show some support and to see if among all these sites we can be exposed to some interesting things. Repeating a comment I saw there, Soylent has got the Slashcode up and running; Pipedot has the articles but no comments or moderation, and Technocrat has the comments/moderation but not much else. All the comments exhorting a consolidation reminds me of the "why do we need only one Linux distro?" conversations. I'm glad for the diversity - we all win.

Follow up (to my own post, boo): Just signed up for an account at PipeDot and instead of a captcha they give you a trig question. Awesome! And beautifully rendered, too - maybe some sort of TeX running behind the scenes? I'm not familiar with this captcha alternative. I also have forgotten my trig, apparently :( sin^2 θ + cos^2 θ = ??? Is the answer "one"? Hell, this site is tough! (this, too, is a test of Unicode and vim digraphs, ha ha).
