OK so after the test, it seems the floodgate of links scraped from some
slashdot-alike have opened, who's got time to read them all?

Straight into the killfile.

I don't think either of the /. spinoffs I know of is the source -- I know
SoylentNews isn't, at least. The links appear to be too indiscriminately-chosen
and in many cases much too close to being spam.

In cases like this, I think the old moniker "bozo bin" is particularly
appropriate. ;)

Just to play the devil's advocate, this isn't /exactly/ bozodom, as
someone is trying to provide useful and relevant content to this
newsgroup. I've seen worse spews. Who's the asshole, for example, who
seems to be littering the internet on a semi-regular basis with some
sort of all-caps rant about Silvio Berlusconi being a Mafioso Nazi
racist, or some such drivel? It's popped up in every newsgroup I visit,
unless I use Individual.de's lovely, filtered server.

They are coming from various sources so it may be someone using an RSS
reader, monitoring several sites, and posting using a script like mine.
But my immediate reaction is:

1 no valid email address and I prefer knowing our contributor is a person,
not a bot. People take comments and feedback.
2 too many articles. I'm overwhelmed!
3 I'd personally appreciate more than just the URL - a blurb helps me
decide

Otherwise I'm grateful for the contribution!

I posted earlier (but it seems to have gone into the void) I think it
was a burst of the Hacker News feed from ycombinator ...

Hey there David, thanks for adding to the group. What kind of a script are

It's an extremely advanced neural net program. Unfortunately it has no
USB interface, so I cannot share it.

Well, I see you're posting from gnus, so you're halfway there. Probably
just a matter of hacking up a little emacs lisp code and choosing a key
binding.

No no, my point was, my email address is obviously not valid, but that
doesn't mean I am a bot. I wasn't implying that I was the offending bot.

Anyway, how can you tell that an email address is valid, and what is to
stop a bot having a valid email address?

Without sending the address an email, and verifing that the destination
MX server accepted the email, you can't determine validity of an email
address.

The most you can do short of sending an actual email is determine that
the format is allowed by the RFC's.

> and what is to stop a bot having a valid email address?

Nothing at all.

Got it - now you're communicating clearly. Your response made it look
like you were identifying yourself as the person behind the
i.robot.nowhere.invalid bot.

My complaint about that contribution to the newsgroup is that if it's
not clear who is injecting the articles, there's no great way to provide
feedback. Usenet permits that, but it's not a great way to contribute
to a community of readers.

My email address on the other hand, is real. But it's disposable, and I
change it periodically when it gets too cluttered up with spam. That
way I'm reachable, but my real address doesn't get polluted.

Yep, unless I'm really really interested in the subject, I tend to
ignore postings with just a url without some comment as to why I
should bother with it.

I'm not, much too much crud to wade through. TLDR!
