I thought of that, and wondered and then dismissed the idea that maybe
early tube work was done with test tubes.

Fleming basically took a light bulb and added a plate, creating a
rectifier. So I don't know how that fits into where "tube" came from.
Old books and magazines likely are the clue, not available to the
wikipediar generation.

Actually, when Thomas Edison was experimenting with the light bulb, he added
another positive electrode in the bulb. He noticed that electricity would
flow across the vacuum to that electrode. This thermionic emission is
called the "Edison effect, and Edison patented it.

I remember (yes, I'm Methusaleh!) the press conference when Edison
first gave a public demonstration. When you entered the hall, it was lit
by gaslight. When the gaslights were suddenly extinguished, a switch was
thrown, and a glass bulb started glowing and slowly filled the hall with
light,
causing great excitement amongst the gathered reporters who all started
rushing for the door, anxious to be the first in print, when Edison shouted,
"Stop, gentlemen, that's no it!", and walking up to the glass bulb he spoke,
"Come here, Watson, I want you!"

I was going to point to tube socks and toothpaste tube. There's also
inner tube which has no ends at all! The tubeness of things with tube
in the name is not a simple matter.

That's because its made from a pipe.

Not true of the tube being discussed.

Radio (electromagnetic communication) in the days of its initial
development was often referred to as "wireless".

I suspect this was because it was competing against the telegraph
system of the day, and to send a telegraph from New York to Boston
required that wires be strung from New York to Boston. Radio did not
require those telegraph wires to communicate from New York to Boston,
and so, it got named "wireless".

Even though many "wires" were involved, not the least of which was the
very long mast called an antenna. Which, back in Radio's early days,
was often a long wire strung between two poles.

Yup. The French term for radio was "TSF", télégraphie sans fils,
telegraphy without wires.

Well done. Quite why this was too much for Mr Metz is a puzzle.

It wasn't to much, simply irrelevant. The fact remains that the
"wireless" used wires. Why that is too much for you is obvious.

Not for transmitting/receiving the signal it didn't, which is what is
relevant here.

What does air have to do with it ? They work fine in a vacuum.

That maybe so, but they're not in a vacuum, they're in the air, which
gave rise
to the ealier term for antenna which was aerial, derived from aerial wire to
distinguish
it from the earth wire.

Older term ? On this side of the pond aerial is current usage.

That depends. I've always used 'antenna'.
