There's too much cutesy shit going around with them. fu.ck >th.at Since last year, a physical location in the United States has been required for .us, apparently Patriot Act nonsense. I have a couple of locality-based names. One of the registratars said new US Department of Commerce regulations required me to file a notarized document to establish residency; the other didn't. I didn't even know the first one required it till they had briefly suspended routing, 'cuz they managed to lose my email address. They also said I'd have to re-certify annually, but they never set that up. It's not quite so nonsensical that I had to prove residence in the locality itself, just the United States. Prior to 2002, locality-based registrations were all that was available under .us. Starting in 2002, second-level registrations were allowed. Other countries with minor Internet access simply license their country code TLD to a commercial registrar for income. Tuvalu found .tv to be quite valuable. Few countries require a physical presence to register a domain name under their ccTLD.
