I believe it had a security snafu or two about a year ago, which required them to take it down for a while. I'd like to propose Jabber as a protocol, but understand it fails now in the age of smart phones etc. that would have a user "appear" on line over the course of the day from different machines. Jabber wasn't made for that. Perhaps it could be extended, but it took a long time for all stakeholders and standards bodies to even coalesce around the Jabber protocol, so I'm not convinced that could happen quickly. There's Google Hangouts, but I'm now immensely leary of anything that ties me into the Google ecosystem (I'm a hypocrite with an Android in my pocket, I know) for the same reasons I was leery of Microsoft a decade ago: everything comes as a package, and you don't get Hangouts without also getting G+, which immediately overtakes your Youtube account, which requires you to confirm an email address via Gmail etc. It's no better than Outlook -> Exchange -> Sharepoint -> Server package, etc. Meanwhile, back on topic, I don't think there's a suitable protocol in the open for us to use. Some smart dude ought to quick propose one and maybe make some money with it. Seems like an opportunity.
