I've been playing around with Plan 9 (specifically the much more active 
fork of the OS, called 9front) for a while.  It's a pretty familiar 
environment from the shell.  Everything is a file, including windows 
and sound devices.  It's pretty neat in that way and I can see a lot of 
potential.  The issues that I have with the OS, as it stands, are few 
but quite crippling for most users.  It essentially is meant for 
tinkering by developers, and I would guess that most people run it in a 
virtual machine.  There are very few end user applications.  The 
official interface is a very strange but oddly compelling program 
called Acme, which is kind of a blend of a multi-window shell and text 
editor that is very mouse-oriented.  It has a couple of neat features, 
though - a write-once filesystem in addition to the regular kind, the 
file-oriented interface of course, and the fact that it is extremely 
lightweight.  It also supports transparent integration of different 
machines into one larger virtual, distributed machine made up of 
terminal nodes, compute nodes, and storage nodes.

It's worth a shot to see what the Unix developers thought they should 
replace Unix with.
