I just realized I had never replied to this. I don't necessarily believe that squte needs a search box on the main page, but a search link in the "Map" box might be nice. As for "scanning through the Usenet group hierarchy", I should explain how the http://newswebreader.com site works for that. There's a tab labeled "All" that will let you list all the top-level groups (e.g., alt.*, comp.*) available on the site. From there, you can drill down very quickly to find any group you might be interested in (the site carries a *lot* of groups), and then quickly get to all the recent posts in those groups. Mind you, I'm not suggesting that anybody use that site for reading news, as it is kind of limited. However, if your goal is to quickly see what groups are out there, if they're still active, and what the recent posts have been like, then this is actually a pretty good tool. For example, I just checked out the first 10 comp.lang.* groups (from c.l.ada through c.l.basic.visual.misc) in a little over one minute... and from this, I now know that c.l.ada and c.l.awk are very active, c.l.apl and c.l.asm.x86 are somewhat active, c.l.basic.visual.misc is kind of dead, and the rest are really dead. For somebody coming back to Usenet after a long hiatus, this might be a good way to find groups to start following right away, and possibly some that might be relatively easy to resuscitate. -- I drive a '74 AMC Hornet in my dreams.
