and it's totally optional.  I have yet to ever use Gnome3 - simply
install cinnamon or windowmaker or just fluxbox or i3 and call it a day.
To me, exchangeable desktop environments are one of the joys of *nix.

On Windows at work I find myself crippled by lack of multiple
desktops/viewports.  There's a product called Dexpot or something - I
paid like $30 for it - that gets you close, but it's not quite the same.
