I like the effect of the red font on page 7 of:
    https://wiki.mozilla.org/images/9/93/LCA2012.pdf

Can this be done with postscript?

Not easily, I don't think. The saturation gradient is fairly easy, where
it's pinker at the top and redder at the bottom, and the outlining is
fairly easy too. The fuzzy edge of the drop shadows is probably harder,
though, I don't immediately see how I'd do blurring. And, the white
lines where the "light catches" aren't easy: given a font that permits
such analysis, I can imagine an algorithm that breaks the letter
outlines into many straight lines and processes those for angle, etc. to
add the white reflections (I do this kind of thing when I want to, say,
nestle letters perfectly right up against each other), but that takes a
fair few lines of non-trivial thought and coding to achieve.

I suppose that for completeness I should mention that I can imagine some
scheme where a very pale version of the letter is drawn many times in a
larger circle, then a slightly darker one slightly further in, etc.,
ending with a grey one at the center of the shadow, but I have never
tried it: I don't know how it would look and how slowly it would go.
They may well be rather better ideas.

Essentially yes, fairly easily.

The graphic you refer to is actually an image, so the font is a picture,
not vector data.

The image is combined with a soft mask, which is transparency, and
therefore not avilable in PostScript, but the mask appears to be 100%
opaque (thus pointless, other than for slowing down processing and using
more memory). Removing the SMask shows no visible differences.

So yes, you could embed that image in a PostScript program instead, and
get the same result.

Well, I meant using a font, not using an image. I would like to use my
own words. ;-)

Then, the answer is no, not really, for a numebr of reasons, one of
which is transparency. But then I don't tbink you could easily achieve
the effect in PDF either.

i am going to say yes, but it would not be easy. this looks like a font
that has been bumped up to 3d with rounded edges and then a lighting
effect applied. i've done some 3d stuff in postscript, even a basic
lighting effect, which can be seen in the below video, but doing to a font
what i describe would be a lot more work still.

see

The PS code is also available.

Looks very usable. I am going to study that. Thanks.

I find that very interesting. How did you do that?

Yes. I agree it would be possible, but possibly very
difficult.

I'd start by taking the charpath.
If it's a stroked font (rare) do a strokepath.

Then I'd dump the path back into postscript and do a
triangulation of the polygons (Wikipedia).

Then you add a third dimension to the coordinates and
raise the Z on interior points. That would give you a
3d-mesh to which you can apply lighting effects.
