True, and that's why you will usually do a "flattenpath" before "pathbbox". And since the path is automatically flattened anyway before a "stroke"/"fill"/etc the result should be accurate enough.

This use case is explained in the PS Reference Manual under "pathbbox" (with a reference from "flattenpath" too), and also used near the end of section 5.4 "Glyph Metric Information". I remember the PS Cookbook also explains this (but I do not have it at hand to check).
