Good point, and that's almost certainly what's causing the differences in the bbox calculation. The GS bbox device does calculate the extents of the paths, which is why its more accurate I suspect. Note that mitres can also give similar errors, and this too can vary considerably with the resolution. One of the GS scripts, possibly ps2eps or ps2epsi, used to work by rendering to a low resolution bitmap and counting the pixels to find the boundaries, which is where this problem (with text as well) surfaced originally, and is why that script was altered to use the bbox device.
