In my recollection, and by now I guess that would be an old Racket,* there was no emphasis on creating binaries in the Racket intro- ductory material, nor user interface. It's more like, here's a pro- gramming language, use it! And until binaries are habitually made with Racket, and by that I mean production binaries, with code signatures for the Microsoft and fruit vendor platforms, that's not likely to change. For students, it'd perhaps be much more valuable to teach them how to disable anything that nags if the resulting binary doesn't carry a signature made with a certificate from the CA system, especially when it needs to be a more expensive certificate and/or requires ID validation. I don't know about graphical programs but I suspect not then either. Students who are trying to ship executables rather than source code ... well, they can learn how to do that. This whole thing is just another brick in the wall of reasons people give not to use Lisp. Somehow that wall never has any bricks at all for Python. That would certainly help me. I have repeat nags because my self made binaries get modified by CL.EXE when it decides it's a good idea to incrementally link. I think that's not related to signatures, though I don't know. But that's also not a discussion for comp.lang.lisp, since as far as I know, nobody uses CL.EXE to link Common Lisp. That said, have you ever thought to put your own self signed certificate into the system? I did that once, when testing H.T.T.P.S. validation on Windows 10 development system. In my tests, the new self signed /system certificate/ just worked. Albeit, I did not do that for code signing. I believe that would be an excellent second semester exercise, for webservers built on top of Common Lisp. My preference is Hunchentoot, though I don't recall ever using it directly with encryption. I usually leave that to a front-end Apache, and Apache also runs on Windows. There used to a set of binaries done by Microsoft, I believe, and I'm not sure who is now making Apache binaries for the eleven Windows, and I'm not looking it up since it's outside the scope of comp.lang.lisp. So, for people with more experience in eleven Windows than I have, how would one create a self signed certificate, start a webserver with Hunchentoot -- or another Common Lisp framework -- and encrypt the conn- ection with that very same self signed certificate, and have it work in regular browsers because it's also part of the system's roots of trust? Here in Common Lisp, I'd be delighted to make use of SDL2 or SDL3 bindings, along with the OpenGL for a simple game. I have also been in databases on and off for the past sixteen years, and have -- I would not say extensive -- but enough experience in tuning both Postgres and MariaDB that you can feel free, if your database sys- tem needs to handle about million people per day -- possibly more, but I stopped counting at million -- to ask tuning questions. I have not seen fit to subscribe to any of the database groups yet, so please let me know which ones you'd like to use for such discussions. Racket has an excellent webserver framework, and a nice DB query library with connection pooling and native protocol support for ODBC, SQLite, Postgresql, MySQL and Cassandra. https://docs.racket-lang.org/db/index.html [I've heard that the MySQL module also works for MariaDB but I have no direct experience with that.] Additionally, Ryan Culpepper has created a library for composing and working with SQL queries as sexprs. It interfaces directly to the DB library. https://docs.racket-lang.org/sql/index.html Of course, before I learned about Ryan's library, I had created my own macros to enable embedding raw SQL into Racket. by the vast majority of programming languages.

Dynamic binding being a really good example. Important enough (to me) that I had to implement it in Python but probably never having required a very efficient implementation. In particular Maclisp used dynamic scope only in the interpreter, unless variables were declared SPECIAL when the compiler would treat them the same way. Other Lisps of that era had similar semantics: Standard Lisp variables declared as FLUID had dynamic scope, otherwise they would have lexical scope but dynamic extent, for instance (there were also GLOBAL variables which had only toplevel bindings. Standard Lisp was a Lisp-1 and function names were global variables I think. I suspect elisp may be one of the few Lisps where dynamic bindings really once were the default everywhere. For closures, they are somewhat easy, for some value of easy, but not at all obvious for the budding compiler programmer. And please forgive my somewhat superficial coverage of the topic. Right now I'm not in a position to browse through my library, nor experiment before this followup. I'll tentatively refer to Appel's /Compiling with Continuations/ and Christian Queinnec's /Principes d'Implamantation de Scheme et Lisp/ for tips on how to implement this. When we are talking about implementing Common Lisp in particular, or a language with closure in the general, we have to realize the implementa- tion of the function -- the binary code, if you will -- has to have a reference to the outer environment where all the /closed over/ -- I think that's the term -- variables are kept. This is of course not only to be able to manipulate the variables and not just local copies, but to keep references for the garbage collector not to collect them on its next run. Exactly how to keep this reference I leave as an /exercise for the reader/ and genuinely hope my book references are not far off. On the garbage collector itself, the book /Garbage Collection Handbook/, whose second edition is by Richard Jones, Antony Hosking, and Eliot Moss isn't all that helpful. Or at least, the first edition wasn't, and I'm not that hopeful it's been changed in the second edition. A budding compiler writer is necessitated to dig up the most pertinent references, and try to implement from them -- if at all going by the book. And by this I mean the advanced topics. Reference counting and a basic mark sweep collectors are covered reasonably well enough, and can be implemented directly from the book. It's when we start to think about threading that things become diffi- cult. And it's possible this gap in the garbage collector literature is what resulted in the Python's /global interpreter lock/, but I'm not Guido van Rossum, and cannot speak for his decision making. This global interpreter lock has made the default Python runtime environment extremely slow for decades, and I'm not digging up exactly how it's been fixed recently. For that I give the word to Lawrence D'Oliveiro -- I hope I got his name right this time -- who is our very own Pythong influencer, and knows exactly how the garbage collector in Pythong works. So a budding compiler writer is relegated to reading the implementation of Ravenbrook's /Memory Pool System/, or -- gasp -- even Boehm's et al. garbage collector for C and C++; and try to learn from the great masters that way. The most pernicious problem with that is a lot of people don't even know Ravenbrook's /Memory Pool System/ even exists. I think the fundamental principle on which the programming industry is bankrolled is based on what was enunciated by brooks in "no silver bullet" -- the goose that lays golden eggs. given bankable developments in hardware and consumption, given access to fiat capital from satan's wazoo, and given the power to launder it, the creation of an essentially managable but fake "developer market" is inevitable. you may have perceived tfb to be petulant when he characterised the "serfs", but they really operate as a "middle class" ratifying the leadership and producing the consumption patterns that are needed (apart from the occasional profits in wage arbitrage). "programming glory" goes to shit. the discipline of graphics has essentially been thrown away, replaced and shaped with by "hardware developments", and it is in the interests of the bankers managing the deficts to bless the slop. (i'm surprised if tfb still in adam smith)

Absolutely. The problem I see is that some people become so engrossed in their games that they forget to get a life. And most people who will play a game are not capable of creating one - so games don't really add much to the ranks of developers. I had an Atari and there were some kiosk arcade games I enjoyed when I was in high (secondary) school. Many [most?] are not capable of (re)creating even basic library functions that they use routinely. YMMV, but in my opinion a great many software "developers" would be doing the world a favor by finding other employment.
