So you have a problem with Common Lisp. Yet another reason, to me, why

This is why some more modern languages, like Perl and Python, use
reference-counting as a first resort, only falling back to garbage
collection when they cannot avoid it. The temporary multivalue
structure created in such a case can be immediately disposed after the
assignment.
A language design is not just a bunch of language features, but how
they interact. The interaction between features in Common Lisp
requires you to do things in a certain way, that makes it hard to
benefit from more modern design concepts.

Holdover from Scheme which requires catching all returned values.
However, Lisp has the failing that catching the 4th returned value
requires catching the first 3 even though you don't care about them.

What bugs me is that catching [however many] values with
destructuring-bind in Lisp or the various *-values forms in Scheme
requires unambigiously naming each of them.
I actually prefer having to account for all the return values because
I think it is less error prone - but I like to have syntax to ignore
the values I have no interest in.
Yes, I could create macros to do that - perhaps somebody already has -
but other than date/time I just don't need to deal with multiple-value
returns very often.
YMMV.
A while back I created a Modula3 inspired language that included
multiple value returns, and used the underscore ('_') as a placeholder
for ignored return values in calls.

Similar to the way you'd use a dedicated single buffer for all leaf
function stack frames, I used a single "junk" buffer as the target for
any return value being ignored.

This is what I do. For instance

I need to change my let-values macro to do the same thing, in fact.
This is a really good case for language extensibility: the language you
have is missing a feature which makes programs a pain to write and read
(unneeded variables, and IGNORE declarations needed, but in fact unless you
know more than you should need to about the implementation you likely need
IGNORABLE (and then you give up on warnings you'd like to have so ...), so
you just incrementally implement what you'd like on top of it.

The empty list is indeed magic (it is the unique object which is a list but not a cons) but there need be no symbol to denote it: it can just be (). For example: Scheme, which does this. In CL and its ancestors, NIL is a very weird thing: it is not just a symbol bound to the empty list (the way T is just a symbol bound to itself), but rather the empty list is three things: a list, not a cons, *and a symbol*. (symbolp '()) is true in CL: the equivalent is false in Scheme. If this was not true in CL: if NiL was just an ordinary symbol bound to the empty list, which was not a symbol, then (eq 'nil '()) would be false. It's also interesting as to whether () should be self-evaluating in CL. Even if NIL *was* just an ordinary symbol then the CL evaluation rules say it should be self-evaluating, because the only objects which are not are symbols, and conses. (defconstant end-of-list (let ((result (cons 0 0))) (setf (car result) result (cdr result) result))) That’s a constant for which (car end-of-list) will give end-of-list as will (cdr end-of-list). Your implementation will need to handle circularity with grace. This makes the implementation of #'listp simpler; it just becomes #'consp. You would need to use #'endp to detect the end of the list, but that’s recommended anyway. Nothing is compatible with this and you will have constant work if you wish to use your lists like that. Dear Lawrence, As usual, you know nothing. That "list" does not imply a linked list is a malfunction in the Pythong. We, people who actually read algorithm books, and implement our own data structures, want linked lists when we mean "lists", and arrays -- or the GNU given vector like in C++ for weirdness' sake -- so this is only going to confuse people new to Pythong. Of course, as a Pythong influencer, you don't care about confusion in other people, but it's there nevertheless. Yes, I can get half way by using packages and shadowing real NIL. But
in such approach Common Lisp still considers empty list to be a symbol
and prints it a symbol. More radical approach as above means that
I can no longer use standard Common Lisp functions so I need to add
"buggy and slow implementation of half of the Common Lisp" to my
program.

Of more consequence, Lisp itself, especially in the 1990s and later, mostly gave way to languages with similar advantages and more direct applicability to common programming problems. Yes Python is one of those. Yes Python has quite a few attractions, and users don't experience its drawbacks much until they get more deeply into it. Yes I use it myself for my own routine tasks, only using other languages because of some inherent Python disadvantage (usually being too slow) or else because I want to use the other language for the sake of using it. The other main de facto Lisp replacement these days is Javascript, which has gotten very very capable, though I've managed to stay away from it because of the awful development culture around it (e.g. the notorious left pad library).

CL by intention retained quirks like that to keep supporting pre-CL codebases. I don't know how CL's other ancestors like Interlisp handled empty lists. Anyway, if you want Scheme, you know where it is.

I consider continuations to be most distingushing feature of
Scheme. I have no use for continuations, but I need UNWIND-PROTECT.
I need multidimensional arrays. I need good performance and
portability to wide range of platforms. Common Lisp almost gives
me this, that is reasonably good performance on major platforms
and portablity at somewhat reduced performance to wide range of
platforms. And I want reasonable compile time. ATM I am
not aware of Scheme implementation that has features that I
need.

Don't know about multi-dimensional arrays that aren't implementation specific, but depending what you're doing, you might want to go even further and use GPU bindings. You're probably more attuned than I am to the compiler situation. There have historically been some good compilers that weren't too slow, but IDK if they're currently maintained other than Racket. https://gambitscheme.org/ does seem to still be around. In fact it's more capable now than when I last looked at it. I might start playing with it.

The poster-child usage for UNWIND-PROTECT is implementing something like WITH-OPEN-FILE, which ensures a file gets closed on exit from a dynamic extent. I was disappointed to discover they’re not considered a normal part of Lisp. I implemented my own little language which is closely modelled on PostScript, but drops the antiquated graphics model and adds lexical binding and continuations.
