I thought I'd try this, without much hope. It works in Firefox Opera
Safari & Chrome; in IE8, the script is executed but not shown. IE 9/10 ?
<!doctype HTML>
<title>test</title>
<body>
aaa
<script type="text/javascript"
style="display:block; white-space:pre; font-family:monospace;">
A = 5 + 7
document.writeln(A)
</script>
zzz
</body>
Result shown :
aaa
A = 5 + 7
document.writeln(A)
12 zzz
In Firefox, copy'n'paste of that does not copy the script part.
In Opera, Safari, Chrome, it does.

Works in IE 9
This even works in IE5.5!

0. Declare `A'.
0.1. Append a semicolon to the script's first line (yes, it is an example;
a bad one).
1. Drop document.writeln() in favor of document.write() or methods
introduced with W3C DOM Level 2 (which IE/MSHTML supports from version
5.0 on).
2. If you use document.write(), escape at least the `<' in the generated
script code. If you use the new methods, nothing needs to/must be
escaped, though.
3. Remove the extra `"'.
Please do not post attribution novels, and get a real name.

Not with javascript. Nonsense propagates like wildfire in this field.

This was not a question about what you found of John, but if John accepts your ablative "mea culpa". John speaks his languages very well, also Dutch. While the Teutoburger Wald where Armin buzzied himself is near here, Armin = Hermann = Hertog = Duce = Duke construction is of later date, "Herman" could better be construed a "Nazi Göring". And what about Sgt Walter Merkel of the 301st Bombardment Group? -- Evertjan. The Netherlands. (Please change the x'es to dots in my emailaddress)

What exactly does "works" mean here?

And its content is then treated as if the script were not styled. You could have discovered that by reading to the end of my previous article, rather than snipping it. You can now look at <http://www.merlyn.demon.co.uk/js-boxes.htm#SSE>, with various browsers In IE8, the style has no visible effect. Note that, at least in Firefox, within the script element such as "<br>" must be written like that, if a BR element is wanted in the final DOM tree rather than a text element "<br>". Obviously, the content of the script element as such is not parsed as HTML, though its output is. Perhaps other normally-invisible Objects, such as those in the Head, can be revealed similarly. Yes, in FF11, the Title can be made visible just above the Body's border by display:block. -- (c) John Stockton, nr London UK ?@merlyn.demon.co.uk IE8 FF8 Op11 Sf5 Cr15 news:comp.lang.javascript FAQ <http://www.jibbering.com/faq/index.html>. <http://www.merlyn.demon.co.uk/js-index.htm> jscr maths, dates, sources. <http://www.merlyn.demon.co.uk/> TP/BP/Delphi/jscr/&c, FAQ items, links.

You can do that since Firefox *1* (and probably earlier, and in a lot of other really old browsers), but not without changing the display property of the HEAD element, too.
