FAQ Topic - How do I suppress a context menu (right-click
menu)?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
A context menu, often triggered by right-click, can be requested by the
user in a few ways. For example, on windows, shift + F10 and on macs,
click-and-hold. Other input devices exist and mouse buttons can be
configured, making the term "right click" a misnomer, in context.
In browsers that allow it, a script can suppress the context menu by
returning false from an object's `oncontextmenu` event handler.
document.oncontextmenu = function() {
return false;
};
Some browsers lack context menus (e.g. iphone). Browsers that have
context menus do not always have a scriptable event for them. Some
browsers can be configured to disallow scripts from detecting context
menu events (IE, Opera); others may fire the event but be configured to
disallow scripts from suppressing the context menu (Firefox,Seamonkey).
Even when the context menu has been suppressed, it will still be
possible to view/save the source code and to save images.

There are legitimate reasons to suppress a context menu as well as a toolbar. For example: the viewport of a game in "fullscreen" mode.

Thank you. The topic caught me in a cranky mood. I am often irritated with webmasters who just *must* use javascript for navigation and delight in roll-over a menu because it appeals to them. It doesn't appeal to me when I am trying to use it; if I fail to move the mouse along a perfectly horizontal line, and I get to start over. Then I want to spit on their "appealing" design. In my opinion, a web page is broken if it doesn't cooperate with right-click, open-in-new-tab. Giving me a javascript something-or-other in the address bar of the new tab does me no good. Likewise webmasters who decide for me what functionality my browser should have, or who think they have oh-so-valuable content that they want to "protect" from someone who has no interest in using it commercially. While those who *do* want to use it commercially will have little trouble stealing it from one who relies on the tricks available here. Making my toolbars go away is a sure way to annoy me. But thanks again for the link and for your informative site.
