| Message-ID | <OdKdnbn2Daj51_jSnZ2dnUVZ_vCdnZ2d@posted.localnet> |
In my HTML webpage, i would like to obtain the visitor's ISP or useable equivalent. With that info, i would like to get/derive the visitor's country at minimum. If i was very ambitious, perhaps the city name as well. I do not want to wait a day (eg: Google Analytics) because by that time, the visitor is obviously gone and the info becomes almost useless for what i would like to do. In less than a second, get ISP, derive country, index that into a table as what to present to the visitor (ie: what new page to call/jump to). Possible? If so, please give references for me. Thanks.

Why? If you are looking for accepted languages, check the appropriate HTTP header. If you are concerned with date and currency formats, you can try to infer those from the language, but that's also problematic. You should let the users indicate their preferences. > > Possible? No and this is unrelated to JS. Please follow-up elsewhere.

You should let the users indicate their preferences. * What HTTP header? A user from somewhere accesses my webpage - how can its internal script "know" that? Do not care about date formats, and certainly care even less about currency (or formats). Crudely speaking i would like to reasonably infer the country first, and maybe the language second. > >> >> Possible? > > No and this is unrelated to JS. Please follow-up elsewhere. Then please tell me what the query IS related to..a vector, please.

Then why do you care about the country?

Not a good idea. Scenario: Joe Brown from Baltimore, MD is
transferred to Munich, Germany. He gets a German ISP. He now is
trying to use your Web page. He might not know German -- or not well
enough to use your Web page -- and might not know the various foreign
formats.
You claim you do not care about currency, but others in a similar
situation might: If Mr. Brown is purchasing something from the U.S.,
he may well be paying with U.S.-denominated means. Showing him prices
in Euros would not be user-friendly to him.
[snip]
Sincerely,
Gene Wirchenko

OK; a bit of disclosure AKA clarity:
Am not going to have various pages, each in a different language.
Do not care about currency because (so far) i do not publish pricing,
and if i eventually decide to show pricing strategy, it all will be in
dollars.
*
Short version of what i have: <script language="JavaScript"> function
snag() { {document.dataholder.gottit.value="someHTMLpage.html"; } }
document.onmousemove=snag; </script>
<!-- this is the only way so far that i can get working -->
<body> <form name="dataholder" action="">
<table border=0>
<tr> <!-- gotta move mouse to get info to following -->
<td><input type="text" size=19 name="gottit" value="Please move
mouse!"></td>
</tr>
</table>
</form>
...
BUT what i really want is to have the HTML part "automatically"
call/launch that someHTMLpage.html file/program/page with NO click and
NO requirement for a mousemove.
Seems that ONLY document.onmousemove will work inside JS.
Help??

Your guess may be right, but the user's expenses are irrelevant to the question. > In any case, if that were the case it would be nice toget info on > location for both.
