#17201 — Continuous vertical marquee doesn't work properly

FromFokke Nauta <fnautaNO@SPAMsolfon.nl>

SubjectContinuous vertical marquee doesn't work properly
Message-ID<agf43qF5b7kU1@mid.individual.net>
Hi all,

I use a script from www.dynamicdrive.com for a continous vertical
marquee, called Cross browser Marquee II. It's the only javascript I can
find for this purpose.
I use it to scroll 8 images vertically, in a continuous way.
It works, but on the second passage all images are stuck together and
have a white background behind them which is wider than the images
themselves. This happens on all even passages. The first and all odd
passages show correctly.
I guess this problem is due to the script. Perhaps someone is able to
correct this?

You can watch this at http://www.pc3.nl/users/dictee. The images scroll
in the left hand column. You can find the script I use underneath the
dashed line.

Many thanks for your help beforehand.
With best regards,
Fokke Nauta

a script from last century, no ?
(early in the century)

I hope you have a button to stop it ? !

maybe is it due to bad css ?

Marvelous! Quite relaxing! I see no "left" column there.

On another page I see a column with images but nothing moving ... (*)
No error in the console of Firefox ...

(*) is there something to move ?
     when images seem to have enough space to be displayed

Could well be ...
No idea

It stops as soon as you hover over the pictures.

I don't use CSS for these images here.

Well, there is, the same as on the other pages. But on the Home page you
should see the images moving upwards.

> On another page I see a column with images but nothing moving ... (*)

That's right. I implemented the moving images only on the main home
page, not on the other pages. There they are fixed.

That's right. But new images are coming and there is no space in the
column anymore. The height would become too much. So I decided to move
them around.

OK, if this script is so ancient, die you have a better alternative?

Certainly Fokke:
write your own, [dat is ook nog eens leerzaam,]
show where you get stuck,
the group will most probably help you there.

This is not a NG where existing scripts are exchanged,
but where code and programming concepts are discussed.

Write my own?
I'd rather first take a course of Java, then. But, then again, I may be
too old for that.
No, I don't see that as a possibility. Neither did I want to exchange
complete scripts. I was looking for just a little finetuning of the
script I found.
But, and that is the good news, I've found it myself.
In the line:
<div id="iemarquee2"
style="position:absolute;left:10px;top:10px;width:100%;z-index:100;background:white;">
I removed "background:white" and now it works the way I want it.

Looking into such a script is leerzaam indeed!

With best regards,
Fokke

Why would you want to do that?

A course of Sanskrit would be nearly as usefull.

Javascrit is NOT a scriptform of Java.

CSS has it's own NG, btw:

Congtratulations. I was not critisizing [with a "z", see other thread] you,
just explaining the the working of this NG.

> Looking into such a script is leerzaam indeed!

More than once, we see newbees in this NG starting with solutions made in
the late 1990's for antiquated versions of Javascript, css and the DOM.

Starting to learn with these van be quite detrimental to the sanity of a
programmer and to the understanding of present day browsers cum script-
engines.

A stern warning is the best we can do in these cases.

Because before one can produce a piece of code, you'll need to know the
syntax.
I don't know exactly how Javascript works, to be honest. How on earth
would I write a piece of code in it? First learn the syntax, then you
can write something.

Perhaps not, but maybe very interesting.

I'm aware of that!

Yeah, that's correct. But sometimes I feel a bit old all of a sudden,
especially when I see that many youngsters are much more capable of
programming something than I am.

But to start learning Javascript?
As a matter of fact I never liked programming. I wrote many Unix shell
scripts once. And I did some Pascal. What I liked was writing complex
batch files for 4DOS, and I still do for the TC/LE command processor
from JP software. And I liked programming BASIC. But that's a long time
gone.
But those were the only exceptions I really liked programming.

Well, thanks for the stern warning.
But anyway, I got my ancient Javascript running!
And I'm quite pleased with it.

Then you'd want to study Javascript, NOT Java. They are not at all the

There is no "Javascript", see also <http://PointedEars.de/es-matrix>.

(You asked for it.)

What's wrong with studying things that are not there?

I am quite happy programming in Javascript, reading fiction, hearing
ingenious lies.

criticising. That's two spelling errors in one word, not bad.

The best : try to see, understand and learn the css 'transition'
(adios all old browsers !)

I imagine you can tinker and try to realize :
- a div sized (the sreen where to display the slider)
   styled in overflow:hidden;
- a div contained by the screen above (id="slider")
   (why same width or a few less)
- that div gets the pictures sized (css) in width:99%;
- you find/create a routine to slide up that div
- when 2nd picture is entirely seen you move the 1st at end
   (and minimize the counter by the height of that picture)
- and so on

var c = 0,
speed = 50,  // bigger = slower
slids = false;

function $(div) {
   if(typeof div !='string') return div;
   // we'll try to interest NatsCape but ... is it yet usefull ?
   return document.layers? document.layers[div] :
   // then all the IEs
   document.all&&!window.opera? document.all[div] :
   // and finally the respectful browsers
   document.getElementById(div);
}
function movetop() {
   c++;
   $('slider').marginTop = - c +'px';
   var s = $('slider').getElementsByTagName('IMG');
   if (c*(-1)>= s[0].height) {
      c = c + s[0].height;
      $('slider').appendChild(s[0]); // zoo! 1st at end
      }
   slids = setTimeout(movetop,speed);  // may not work with IE5
}
funtion stopImg() { clearTimeout(slids); slids=false; }
window.onload = movetop;

Thanks very much for your help.
But I'm afraid this is still too complex for me to get this running.
For instance, "you find/create a routine to slide up that div": I
haven't got a clue as how to do this.
But as you can see in this thread, I already managed to get my script
running. Even if it's ancient.

I'm not sure you did read that ...
(if you don't like to learn JS perhaps would you learn HTML and CSS ?)

The code was given (but not tested)

To slide the div to up
---> merging it negatively on top
      no ?

function moveUp() {
var obj = document.getElementById('slid');
var t = obj.style.marginTop.replace('px','');
t--;
obj.style.marginTop = t+'px';
continu = setTimeout(moveUp,10);
}

Ha ?
You fixed your left column I haven't see ?
It is now visible ?

... no ...
the TD who plays to be a column has only a JS script ...

Thanks for your effort.
The point is:
If you can't cook, I could give you fine ingredients and spices and you
would never be able to prepare a proper meal.
You gave me nice pieces of JS and I don't know what to do with them. I
would never be able to create a workable script.
Unless I would first follow a course.
And I won't. I just wanted a piece of JS to work properly.

Yes, it is visible. Here we all can see it. I'm not the only one. And
not even in the home page but on all other pages as well.

Maybe in flat country but here with my Firefox the column is empty
(nothing visible).
It works with my Chrome.

Could you try to replace in your JS script :

write('</div></div>')

}

by :

write('</div></div>');
close();
}

not far form line 145 in file 'users/dictee/shtml/organisatie.shtml'
for instance

In my script it was on a different line (82) but I found what you meant.
I made the change you suggested. Is this better? Does it now work for you?
