Of course I have heard it many times in more general terms like "always back up important stuff before you make changes". It's just that I'd never had a significant problem like this after making environment variable changes so I didn't realize I was opening myself up to such a can of worms. Unfortunately, it's water under the bridge. I'm still trying to figure out what I should do now to get things back into a state where Eclipse runs again. >> Second, if the environment variable change only takes effect after a >> Windows reboot, which variables might be the culprit? I was an OS/2 loyalist for several years and would probably still be on it if IBM hadn't given up on it. I have some Linux experience and am not completely adverse to using it but the last time I considered it, there were too many things I couldn't do in Linux because there simply were no apps - or at least readily affordable apps - for functions I needed. That was several years back so I don't honestly remember *what* functions those were at least a couple of them were critical to me. I was not - and still am not - keen on having to have to split things I wanted to do between multiple computers or multiple partitions on a computer. Much of my work stuff can ONLY be done in Windows (and IE/Edge) so I don't have much of a choice right now. But maybe I should put Linux on my spare laptop and see if I can live with it, at least for a development environment. I imagine there are a lot more apps for Linux these days. Then again, if I try Arne's advice and just reinstall the JRE/JDK one more time - and try to undo the environment variable changes I made (if I can only remember what I did!) - maybe I'll get Eclipse working on Windows again. I'm not the world's most decisive guy, especially when faced with several good options, each with their own pros and cons.... -- Rhino

I have some Linux experience and am not completely adverse to Most people use Windows because most companies run clients on Windows, even if the servers run on Linux, and most new computers come with Windows. To get any other desktop/laptop you have to build it yourself or special order it. Now we have even more incentive to run Windows since Intel bought McAfee. If you run 7th gen Intel chips they're specially designed to work with Windows 10.

I uninstalled both the JDK and JRE - as per this suggestion - and reinstalled. That's all it took: my Mars.2 Eclipse is now working normally again! I did *not* have to mess with environment variables at all. My copy of Eclipse Oxygen also seems to launch normally. I'm not sure *why* this worked but I'm so grateful to be back up and running I don't care that much at this moment. I just want to get back to writing code. :-) Thanks VERY much, Arne, for the suggestion! -- Rhino

Although not often I have experienced sudden issues with Eclipse which made it stop working at all. Things that sometimes help: - Try an ¨eclipse -clean¨ from the command-line - Start with a fresh workspace (simply by renaming/removing the old one) - Download the latest version and use that (mostly works and gives some additional benefits). The latter is a pain since it makes you reinstall all plugins. Good luck. Silvio

Unfortunately, they didn't work. I tried executing the following from the command line while in the eclipse folder: eclipse.exe -clean There was no change in behaviour: I just got the briefest glimpse of the splash screen and then it failed. I renamed the workspace to workspacex and tried launching Eclipse again. Again, I just got the very brief glimpse of the splash screen and then it crashed again. I've already downloaded the latest version of Eclipse, Oxygen, and installed it on two different drives, C: and F:, and it fails exactly as my Mars version failed. Everything else on my computer works normally but Eclipse just completely fails to run any more and I can't get anything kind of clue from it why it won't run. I may have to switch to Netbeans just to get any work done. This is maddening; I've NEVER had this kind of trouble from Eclipse before and I really don't want to abandon it. -- Rhino

Sorry to hear things are still not working. But from what a read from your other posts it sounds like you have more of a general Java issue than an Eclipse related one. I gave up on Windows over a decade ago so I am afraid I can be of little use there. Again, good luck with fixing things. Cheers, Silvio
