Just curious whether you treated them identical.

The Flash situation you describe is how Java applets work
today if you lower default security settings.

And of course never install apps you did not write yourself.

Because their have been holes in past in the sandbox, does not mean
the sandbox has zero value.

I share your pain :-( I haven't looked at this for a while (other fish
to fry) but I suggest you persist with Applets despite Eric Costlow's
outstandingly successful efforts to make them unusable.

I'm assuming poologic is a for-everyone/individual-user site which means
everyone has to jump through the same hoops but the white-list exception
options were growing by the day trying to put out the fires lit by Costlow.

Each user has their individual white-list for your domain and there are
site policy files. Caller-allowable-code-base was knee-jerked away from
a global wildcard in one of the many versions that came out in the last
12 months unfortunately.

Which options have you tried so far?

I have to admit that signing is all but mandatory now and the
magnificent sandbox paradigm has been assassinated but I will endure.

Cheers Richard

On www.poologic.com, if you click to go to a applet, you get a introductory html page with no applet that tells you that you must upgrade to the latest version of Java and tells you how to whitelist www.poologic.com.

My applets are not signed at all.

Also, I need to try to monitor what Oracle is doing. Not sure when or if my current strategy will no longer be viable.

That is only going to get worse over time. Applets are dead, courtesy of
Sun and Oracle. Any hope that the situation will improve is by this point
ludicrous. I recommend going with option 3, and looking into GWT. It's as
good as you're going to get.

I recently started looking at GWT. I find mixed info on whether it will compile an applet (the UI classes I guess?), but maybe some of the info was too old and it's capable now. I will have to ask some questions and figure it out. I guess I could recode part of it by hand if need be.

It won't.

But that is the benefit!

:-)

You write a GUI application in Java. GWT translates it to JavaScript
and it runs in any browser with no requirement for Java.

The GUI programming model is very Java'ish in my opinion, so if you know
AWT or Swing then I think you will catch up quickly.

But AWT and SWing are also dead. JavaFX is the new thing.

Will GWT translate JavaFX GUI apps to Javascript?

No.

It does not translate AWT or Swing to JS either.

But the GWT programming model is very similar to AWT and
Swing so if he has experience with those it should be easy.

Even JavaFX skills would somewhat translate to GWT.

The similarity is that you have TextBox, Button etc.
that you put on TabPanel, FlowPanel etc.. You can call
addClickHandler med en inner class etc..

It is not that long time since Java 8 came out.

But eventually JavaFX will replace Swing.

????

JavaFX does layout similar to Swing: BorderPane, GridPane etc..

It is just usually declarative not code based.

L&F does not change UI operation just look and feel.

But it is correct that JavaFX does not ship with a native theme.

You will need to find something third party. I believe such exist
for Metro aka Modern UI aka Windows Store App UI.

JavaFX has changed status since JavaFX script was killed.

Not that likely that major functionality will be removed after
becoming part of Java itself.

since it was made available to developers, five and a half since

JavaFX is roughly the same age as Windows Vista -- let us
drink to their bright future!

They're already working on the FlyingPig framework.

Yes. But there is a big difference between an external
library and part of Java.

Many users will want to stick to out of the box Java.

And given the big incompatible changes between JavaFX
1.x and 2.x, then that decision would actually have been
very smart for JavaFX.

If JavaFX is doomed, then Java itself is doomed. Oracle has
put itself in a corner, as they are saying Swing is obsolete
and asking developer to move to JavaFX.

If both AWT, Swing and JavaFX are dead, then what other options
are there for Java to make GUI with?

No.

Java applets and Java desktop apps are a very small niche
within the Java world.

JavaFX failing will not mean anything just like Swing
failing has not meant anything for 10+ years.

There are a few "small" GUI types left:
- web applications
- Android applications

I don't see why. If Java-on-the-desktop died /totally/ this minute it wouldn't
make a lot of difference even this afternoon. And in the longer term it's not
at all clear what "the desktop" will be. If it's Android tablets and similar
then even today Java is used in Rather A Lot of applications (but not
AWT/Swing/JavaFX). If it's something else then Java may or may not be relevant
there.

Personal opinion ("guess" would be a better word): JavaFX will be relevant on
the desktop, or on whatever replaces it, if and only if Oracle manages to make
it the /default/ application framework for that environment. That won't happen
on Windows, won't happen on Apple kit, won't happen on Android (pissing off
Google wasn't perhaps the smatest stategic decision Oracle have ever made ;-)

If, and only if, Oracle feels that control over the desktop (or whatever
replaces it) is /necessary/ for it's future will it attempt to push JavaFX into
that position. And the only way (that I can see) it can do that is by building
its own super-desirable devices.

But of course, there's no reason to suppose that control over the desktop (or
whatever) is necessary to the survival of either Oracle or Java.

    -- chris

P.S. I think there is some scope for a super-desirbale (for businesses)
Oracle-based device: I like the idea of totally transparent integration of the
device desktop with SQL-in-the-cloud.

Java on the desktop is already dead, it died a long time ago. There is
usage for Java on the server. The "desktop" becomes more and more the
browser - applets could have done it, but Oracle killed it succesfully.

Exactly, it won't happen. It's too late, too little, and there are too
many other problems Oracle should have solved. Java applets have been
replaced by Javascript already. Yet, such javascript applications can be
written in Java and compiled to javascript. Thus, java itself is not
dead, but java applets are. Java on the desktop is.

> But of course, there's no reason to suppose that control over the desktop (or
> whatever) is necessary to the survival of either Oracle or Java.

Exactly. Use has been found for java in multiple ways, but it's not the
desktop. JavaFX is just a stupid idea - it does not solve a single
problem java has.

Greetings,
Thomas

My Eclipse is pretty alive and kickin'.

Granted, a lot is going web. But that does not mean that it works for
everything - not even that everything which is currently done web would
not be better off with a local UI.

Cheers
