I didn't know the answer to your question, but wondered what it might be. So I fired up a search, this was the second result and... well, I can't put it any better than they do, so I'll just link it. Please do let us know whether, if you supply a transparent 1x1px "small" image and a full "bigger" image, Swing doesn't try to be too clever and instead does what you expect. On a more general note, however, I should point out that what you're trying to do is wrong. For either, a) you are trying to do what you are trying out of an idiosyncratic motivation, i.e. for shits and giggles, and then you're wrong because you shouldn't: when it comes to UI/UX you should instead stick to well-established paradigms; or b) you are doing this because someone is forcing you to, and then you're wrong because see a) and you're going along with something that is wrong. Not that this needs to stop you, of course. I just felt I should point it out. -- DF.
