Back to the original question: In 15 years of development work for midle 
to large sized companies I have never seen an open source database used 
in the production environment, it's mostly Oracle, SQLServer, and DB2, 
with the single exception of PostgreSQL.

And this is usually independent of the choice of programming language. 
What does happen sometimes is that companies go for an entire integrated 
stack of products, such as deciding to use Oracle and doing all 
development with an Oracle-based framework such as ADF inside Oracle 
JDeveloper etc.
