I have tried teaching a beginner in person and it was tedious. Unless that person is really good at picking up new things, it takes more than a couple hours a week.

Also, on-line forums like Usenet are "narrow" channels: The process
of exchanging questions and answers is a slow one, ill-suited to the
transfer of large amounts of information. Usenet is fine for "When
should I implement hashCode()?" and "Will `volatile' work here, or must
I synchronize?" but is not so good for "Please teach me Mandarin." More
efficient channels -- tutorials, books, classes -- can be found for that
sort of thing.
