I did not say that I plan to quickly learn both, only the basic concepts. You should know what are the basic concepts in a server/client web design. I want to put my hands and eyes on the execution of basic demos as fast as I can. Nobody says it will complete my training, it is only a good start. Besides, all this should be obvious to any experienced software engineer. This is nothing unusual http://tomcat.apache.org/tomcat-8.0-doc/index.html particularly http://tomcat.apache.org/tomcat-8.0-doc/appdev/installation.html Can't think of a better place to start. Once you get this sorted out you can get a container (for example https://glassfish.java.net/) and start to mess your head up with EJB and distributed transactions and what have you. Not much point though if you don't understand basic Java concepts like classpath, package, jar etc Others have pointed you to the relevant language docs IME books are mostly obsolete when they roll of the press. YMMV of course. Rob -- Not floundering ... just fishing
