Try this sequence, then. I had 20 years and several languages and OSen
under my belt when I learnt Java and this worked for me:
1) download and install the following from Oracle:
- the current Java SE SDK (Software Development Kit). This includes
the runtime and libraries (JRE, java Runtime Environment) so you
don't need to download the JRE as well
- the Java documentation set from Oracle. This is not part of the SDK
and contains the library documentation as well as the language spec.
IMO a locally installed copy is essential.
2) download and install ant or maven (Java make equivalents: ant is
easier to use and is supported by most Java IDEs)
3) if you want an IDE, decide which one you want, download and install it.
Eclipse and the Oracle are free, IntelliJ is not.
4) I used a WROX book, Ivor Horton's 'Beginning Java' when I was learning
Java. It was OK: I bet there are many worse books out there.
The only significant thing it didn't cover is the use of javadocs
and the art of writing comments and using annotations so that javadocs
generates good class and package documentation: if you don't use these
well your name will be cursed by future programmers.
5) You'll probably want RDBMS access, so install a suitable RDBMS
(Derby, MariaDB and PostgreSQL are FOSS) and its JBDC driver.
With this you can write GUI database apps with or without network
access.
6) Then add on the Oracle Java EE extension package, install one of the
app servers such as JBOSS or Tomcat and get stuck into Java EE.
This is the appropriate order to work in because Java EE is essentially
Java SE plus additional libraries (OK, there may be a preprocessor or two
as well but lets not quibble about details).
