I tested a jpg and a png no problems without the extra jar, not sure what format we may have initially included the jar for.  So I'll need to find the list of formats supported by javax.imageio and a list that still require jai.  It's annoying if we have to include the jar as is and write logs every time we render an image, and it's slightly less annoying to download the source into a custom project to get rid of the logging.
