Dude, it's not you. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Crisis_of_Democracy

Because people were too bitchy in the 60's this threatened some rich people and their security / status / power, the American populace was consciously dumbed down from the inside out, the public school system poisoned, intellectualism watered down, to make sure people did not have more skills than those required by their chosen "career" and not to be aware enough of what was going on to disrupt the activities of the government. Of course, it's failing, slowly, but the populace is still, on the whole, dumber than last century.

> My Vic-20 program ensured that both master-key and user-key were quite ragged, making the lock more difficult to pick.

Who was it who said you probably wrote that program to break into hotel rooms, and that it was definitely not paid for, and possibly illegal? What do you have to say to that?

> So Juergen is trying to teach people how to program in Forth with his tutorial. I wish him good luck! Maybe after he teaches people how to program, he can teach pigs to sing and dogs to drive...

Programming could be simpler if hardware generally wasn't terrible. Engineers often don't realize that humans actually have to program the thing. In the meantime, Windows!

Programming could also be simple enough for the average person to construct basic tasks if society wasn't dumbed down, but also if the smarties hadn't created a culture of complexity to protect their job niche. It gets worse and worse each year. It's kind of like fortification; they make up new complicated terms because it makes them feel/look smart, and people applaud them and pay them to overthink things, so they keep doing it.

> Actually, with this language that I'm designing, I am hoping to make it simple enough that people who have never programmed before will be able to pick it up. I am mostly aiming at machinists who want to generate gcode for CNC machines, but it could be used by almost anybody for almost anything.

You're designing a language? Is it the Novice thing or different?

I saw the movie: "I, Robot." Issac Asimov predicted a future in which robots would become like people. I think he had it completely backwards --- I predict a future in which people become like robots --- if computers are going to become as smart as people, we will have to meet in the middle.

That was Rod Pemberton. I said that he was on my "twit list" for saying this. Actually, he already was.

My program was written for locksmith to do master-keying, specifically for a motel. It was legitimate. I didn't get paid though --- it was just a learning exercise for me --- the locksmith was a family member.

How are you going to break into places with a computer??? Don't you guys know anything about real-world stuff, such as how the lock on your door works?

The novice package is not a language --- it is entirely ANS-Forth code --- I wrote that when I still cared about ANS-Forth.

Forth-200x is going to be another failure, just like ANS-Forth, so I have moved on --- I'm designing my own Forth now, that is not ANS-Forth compatible.

Yeah... Rob's idea seemed quite off-the-wall. Anyway, cool, after your explanation I understand what that program was about much better.

> Forth-200x is going to be another failure, just like ANS-Forth, so I have moved on --- I'm designing my own Forth now, that is not ANS-Forth compatible.

Forth took years and years to hone, so I can't say I think you're going to succeed with that, but have fun. I have written 3 non-standard Forth systems and ended up using ANS because I wanted to write applications not Forths.

I'm going to keep writing in ANS because it works just fine for the time being and is an more-or-less "official" standard. I tweaked it with an overlay to fit my tastes. There is no flaw in the standard that isn't really just a nitpick, because I know it's good enough to get real work done.

Why did ANS Forth fail? Not enough applications? No free compliant desktop Forths?

If it did I was unaware of that. In its new form as Forth2000x it still
lives on. It is a very workable basis for allowing cross-compatibility
between different base Forths for the most part (I can run most of the same
source on VFx, PowerForth and GForth without tweaking) and the robustness
certification that I provide to clients makes great use of the fact we have
a standard.

Oh, good. Thanks for chiming in. This is what I want for my code too, besides the possibility of collaboration.

As far as I can tell, ANS Forth "failed" only in the minds of a very few
people on the fringes of the Forth community. Those of us who were using
Forth in our work both before and since Forth94 have found it to be a
significant step forward, both for us and for our users.

Cheers,
Elizabeth

Did you hear that Hugh?

That's funny. I'm on the "twit list" of the guy who has openly claimed
here that he has failed at every job he ever had: college dropout, forth
programmer, C programmer, machinist, taxi cab driver, etc.

So, what's the truth Hugh? Are you a failure as you've claimed or is that
just a deception or ruse?

As you've said, a lot has changed since 1984. Locks aren't picked anymore.
For the past decade or so they've used a "new" technique. Look up "bump
key",
or see "The Lockdown" series, especially, "Locked, but not secure" Part I
and II and "Locked, but maybe secure" Part I and II by Marc Weber Tobias,
author of "Locks, Safes, and Security":

http://www.engadget.com/about/editors/marc-weber-tobias/
http://www.amazon.com/Locks-Safes-Security-International-Reference/dp/0398070792

> My Vic-20 program ensured that both master-key and user-key were quite
> ragged, making the lock more difficult to pick.

Seriously, I don't see how that would help. There are still two break
points
for each pin (3 pin pieces) for dual key locks. I.e., one line of breaks
will
be low and the other will be high. So, it doesn't matter that the master
key
uses a high position instead of a low since both high and low breaks are
present. The lock picker will the easier set of breaks to pick.

BTW, a simple Google search will pull up anti-pick

I'm not sure about that.

Ms. Rather disagrees with Forth being bottom-up.

You've mentioned "magic" twice. The only thing missing from this
so far: "mushroom" ...

No, what Forth needs is a solution to the "everying thing I learned about
structs and computer science I learned from other programming languages
and I brought into Forth myself" issue. Normally, that's called syntax,
but Forth has hardly any of that. Perhaps, that's what your novice package
is for? But, Forth will clearly have none of it!

MIX is wonderful, isn't it. The iForth distribution has had
an emulator, compiler, and debugger for it since the early
days. The people that read Knuth don't need such software
because they are in a class of their own (they may not even
need a computer :-) DK and CM do have some characteristics in
common.

Oh my, I got the ever so dreaded "twit" label from Hugh ...

Well, just what _were_ we supposed to think about that?

Let's review what you said:

A young kid, you, who can't actually program yet, was hired
to program, in a language he doesn't actually know, which
was not widely known yet, or even widely available in
1984, the master keycodes for door keys, something which
is generally kept secret, for a cheasy motel, on an
unbelievably underpowered Vic-20, a home computer, not a
business machine, such as an IBM PC, in said language:
Forth. Yup, that's a believable tale ... I'm not saying
it's not true, just that it's *truly* unbelievable! At
best, if it's true, I'd label it foolish on their part.

Are we supposed to seriously believe you weren't after the
motel's master key to sneak into motel rooms, perhaps for TV,
HBO movies, or pr0n, room booze, telephone service for dialing
up BBSes, money from pay massage beds or pay telephones or
tips for motel staff, or even a place to stay for free without
parental supervision or law enforcement, e.g., to consume
drugs or drink or smoke or have sex, etc? Having a master
key to a motel, whose exposed door rooms can be entered and
exited without motel management noticing, would've been the
"holy grail" or a "golden ticket" for a young urban hacker
in the 1980's. This is the realistic scenario as to why
anyone *not* in the locksmith industry or lock manufacturing
would be dealing with master keycodes in 1984.

So, are we supposed to honestly believe you were hired by
said motel and paid to write _locksmith_ software for it ...
on a Vic-20 of all things!?!? It's ludicrous even for 1984.
The only thing more ludicrous would've been if you said it
was on an even more useless machine such as the Timex
Sinclair 1000. A Commodore C64 or Apple II might've been
believable, if it wasn't for the fact that the motel wasn't
about to let some stranger deal with their master keycodes.

C'mon now...

Aye. I thought of this when your tutorial was criticized. It seems that we
have these levels:

1. Core Forth, and the Forth machine.

2. Higher-level extensions: OO systems, quotations, data structures,
FSL, etc.

3. DSLs that still aren't application-level. I think of JvN's state
machines and formula translator, even stuff like gl-helper.fs's
SHADER: word.

4. Application lexicons. You're no longer writing in Forth; you're
writing in 'jRPG Scene Definition Language', or 'Monster Description
Language'.

We have tons and tons of level #1 documentation, and tons of statements
to the effect that level #4 is where you really want to be, and that
this is where the magic of Forth is. We also have tons of level #2 code
and discussion: you want coroutines, optimized tail recursion,
lse64-style 'then'?

  (n -- -1|0|1 )
  : sign ;
  : sign  dup 0< then drop -1 ;
  : sign  dup 0> then drop  1 ;

... clf has got it!

But we don't have much about how you get from #1 to anywhere else.
Not because there's nothing to say about this, I think, but just
because nobody's said it. Is it worth mentioning that I often create
linked lists by starting with VARIABLE and a word to push items onto
it, and then add whatever I specifically need? Or how about talking
about how to translate algorithms written in other languages in Forth?
Just for level #2 stuff.

variable scores \ list of (cdr,r:score)
  : score ( r -- )
    align here scores @ , scores ! f, ;

  ...

  : each-score { xt -- }
    scores begin @ dup while dup >r cell+ f@ xt execute r> repeat drop ;
  : average ( -- r )
    0e 0 [: f+ 1+ ;] each-score s>f f/ ;

We're also thin on examples of level #4 code. There's the washing machine
example that starts with Core Forth and ends in a Washing Machine Operation
Language within a screen. And then there's... what else?

I do appreciate having more Forth to read in Kindle format.

To talk about level 4 an awful lot of explanation (domain
knowledge) is needed. The merest example will pull in
your 'personal toolkit/vocabulary', which in my case
covers hundredths of files all linked together.

And then, at level 4 everything is so darned simple that
there is nothing to discuss :-)

Its like a bitmapped character: looks great at a distance.
When you zoom in it seems possible, or maybe even necessary,
to remove, add, or nudge a pixel. When you zoom out again
all these changes are horribly wrong.

i suggest you to publish paid mobile apps for this (include tutorial and interpreter)
in that case people could use the builtin forth intepreter to practise
and of cause you could give them test and check if they really got the concepts

i suggest this because when i read "starting forth", i found none of the forth intepreter acts just the same as the book saiys,i know its about the years, but since forth is tiny campared to others, why cant you just package the environment you are talking about to the turtorials? just imaging, after 20 years people found the app and still could learn from it when they got the emulator just like NES does

funny thing, i never thought about this before ... but i think all mobile apps will evaporate into the ether after The Fall ;)

Have downloaded your tutorial from Amazon and MPE software. Seem to be missing something obvious :-

In the MPE AIDE environment :
Downloaded to TOOL CAPTURE DISPLAY window : file LITELP2553SA plus supporting files. OK
WORDS runs - OK
Have downloaded another file [ for I/O handling ] ie INCLUDE c:\gpio2553.fth
WORDS shows new words present eg HI , LO etc.
CAN define  my own new words eg : xxx  3 HI . ;
But CANNOT execute anything in this window.

However in POWERTERM window - Cannot download 99 % of c:\gpio2553.fth [ except first definition ie PORT1 ] but can define and execute new words.

****** [ I am trying to control PORT1 to set bits high or low ]***********

How do I compile code, Flash it so it runs on start-up ???

THANKS

THIS FORTH LITE TUTORIAL was written for 18 months BEFORE there were any MPE LITE versions for 430 and for ARM. It was at the time named LITE to show that not ALL Forth words are necessary, or a defined Forth. I verified it with VFX as people can read if they look at the eBook.
Runs with Swiftforth as well.

It clearly states that you have to download VFX - the free version - this project was for the free downloadable VFX only - only to use the PC, no additional hardware. As this is what we all have. And as you might have learnt, the same runs with GFORTH on tablets as well as I have told - here as well NO 430, NO ARM, NO USB, no Bluetooth.

AFTER you have learnt VFX or another one this way - you might want to try the 430 or ARM versions from VFX. MPE has manuals for download to show how to do this.

I have not had the time to write such a version, might do in future. But as everything is for free in the Forth area - there is not much petrol to drive this unit forward.

Any question about the VFX LITE products please address to MPE.

So it seems you downloaded the wrong version. 2553 clearly shows you downloaded the MSP430 version as this is the chip. Restart with VFX.
