This is because JVM is a stack-based machine, but *not* a Forth VM. The main difference is that Forth has a separate return stack, while JVM has just one single stack. The other thing is that a JVM compiler is a batch compiler. This is the punch card thing you are probably talking about: Java is still following the punch card model of writing code in an editor, running it through a compiler, and then execute the resultung binary. This is not the way of Forth, which is an interactive system. You can work around that in Java, Clojure does so, but it isn't designed that way. Working around the single-stack obstacle is considerably harder. Therefore, it is not possible to do a Forth directly on JVM. You can write a Forth compiler in Java, but it won't directly generate JVM byte code. Therefore, the only thing you'll find on JVM are Forth interpreters: c2.com/cgi/wiki?OtherLanguagesForTheJavaVm > Peoples want a .jar that works, nothing else. The JVM is stack based and run on CPUs that aren't stack based. Most (all?) language running on the JVM aren't stack based. The JVM almost-but-not-quite fit the need so it shouldn't be done ? Meh > Working around the single-stack obstacle is considerably harder. > Therefore, it is not possible to do a Forth directly on JVM. Again, so what ? Sure it's hard because you can't do it directly using directly the jvm stack. But it's not impossible. Lisp did it. Both compiler and interpreter. On a stack based VM running on a register based CPU. Clojure also target the CLR (.net) and JS (Javascript). > You can write > a Forth compiler in Java, but it won't directly generate JVM byte code. > Therefore, the only thing you'll find on JVM are Forth interpreters: > > c2.com/cgi/wiki?OtherLanguagesForTheJavaVm I'll check > > Peoples want a .jar that works, nothing else. > > Really? This fact hasn't changed since. > The JVM is stack based and run on CPUs that aren't stack based. Sure. That has no meaning to the discussion we have: register based CPUs can emulate stack based VMs. Unfortunately, the other way round isn't true. Which is why people build register based CPUs. > Most (all?) language running on the JVM aren't stack based. That's because the JVM is not suited for a stack based language. It is an intermediate language for Algol-like languages, and other languages with locals and lexical scope. Your argument is proving what? That it is not suitable for stack based languages? That's what I'm saying. > The JVM almost-but-not-quite fit the need so it shouldn't be done ? Meh It's not even an "almost", it is pretty far from being useful for implementing Forth. It looks like it might be a fit if you have very little understanding of the topic, but if you look closer, you see that it isn't useful. As long as you don't have a separate return stack, it might look a bit like Forth, but is something quite different. >> Working around the single-stack obstacle is considerably harder. >> Therefore, it is not possible to do a Forth directly on JVM. > > Again, so what ? On a stack based VM running > on a register based CPU. > Clojure also target the CLR (.net) and JS (Javascript). No big problem, these are languages with lexically scoped local variables, the thing the JVM is built for. BTW: There is a Forth-like language for CLR: www.codeproject.com/Tips/1752/Delta-Forth-NET It is a batch compiler, not a traditional Forth; in so far it is pretty limited. It actually is derived from a similar approach to JVM, which apparently was abandoned by the author a long time ago. It is missing a significant part of what we call Forth and why we like Forth. And it still doesn't use CLR's native stack as Forth data stack, because that is simply not feasible. There are interpreters for Forth on .NET, too. The whole thing with these run time environments is that they have been done by people who are still in the late 1950s, and have been stuck with the Borroughts B5500, when it comes to stack-based languages. >> You can write >> a Forth compiler in Java, but it won't directly generate JVM byte code. >> Therefore, the only thing you'll find on JVM are Forth interpreters: >> >> c2.com/cgi/wiki?OtherLanguagesForTheJavaVm > > I'll check > >> > Peoples want a .jar that works, nothing else. >> >> Really? > > The average programmer/manager/CTO : yes. Check this TelTalk : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qp0HIF3SfI4
Here is the thing : "People buy why you do it not what you do"
If you don't understand this, you're screwed.
I told you what i needed to use Forth in production.
If i can't have it, well, forth will be my esoteric-toy-language
i'll use in my spare time.
There is another (old) language that became popular without jvm target :
Erlang.
"Build massively scalable soft real-time systems" you don't need big
marketing budget to find this catch-phrase. I like Erlang,
it's in production and playing a major critical role thanks to RabbitMQ.
I believe i can solve some of my problems more easily using multiple stack.
But only SOME of my problems so i need interoperability. That's exactly
why there is so many different languages on the JVM and why many different
language are used in the same application.
I have a very very simple idea, it really is stupidly simple :
1) you create a list of functions
2) you have many stacks
3) you run a function
4) the function pop once a (or many) stack
5a) the output of the function decide which function is ran next
5b) OR the next function is popped out of a "function stack" that contain
reference to functions.
SIMPLE! I believe i can implement that kind of functionality using forth.
But i need some readily available stuff.
Because i'm not willing to reimplement HTTP/ZeroMQ/JSON/XML/...
Running on the JVM provide access to gazillions of library.

The main problem is the requrement that the expression stack be of a fixed size and be balanced across branches. Andrew.

The main problem is the requrement that > the expression stack be of a fixed size and be balanced across > branches. a nice paper : http://www.csc.kth.se/utbildning/kth/kurser/DD143X/dkand12/Group2Mads/report/AntonKindestam.pdf A Lisp compiler for the JVM or How to implement dynamic programming languages on top of the JVM or Lack of JVM TCO considered annoying I don't understand why you're so focused on the JVM stack. Can't use it directly, then don't. It's stupid simple to have a static method (in the jvm sense) returning a http://docs.oracle.com/javase/7/docs/api/java/util/Stack.html That's the magic of the jvm, it come with an impressive rt.jar and every single stuff in it can be called with an 8bit jvm opcode. The jvm internal operand stack is a software emulation anyway. So, who care ? About the operand stack, to be exact : The maximum depth of the operand stack of a frame is determined at compile time and is supplied along with the code for the method associated with the frame Emphasis on *maximum depth*.

Well, we're not dead and our compilers are well documented.

Not only that, there has been a lot of new Forth compiler technology in
the last 20 years. The OP should check out modern Forths, including
those from Stephen's company MPE and from mine, FORTH, Inc. Both
companies have free evaluation versions available. Also, there are
widely-used modern versions of free systems such as gForth and
Win32Forth available. Look at those before declaring Forth "dead or dying".
Cheers,
Elizabeth

I'm not declaring Forth dead (see my previous post, the first line is "forth isn't dead yet". I was refering to companies. And that was my 1st impression. The OP (Epic Fail) is refering to java & other language and he is wondering what happened. Well, you could ask the same question in a few years and add "missed the JVM hype". With 2 major VM (JVM and CLR) and cheap superfast hardware the trend is : "Use the language that fit the need" and big applications running on the JVM are developed using different language. All compiled as a .class and interoperable and bundled in a .jar that will be automagically downloaded and installed when running maven. Thx for the links to MPE & Fiji :) -- Ker2x
