Note that this will give you an xt for the compilation semantics for
words with non-default compilation semantics. For normal words, it
does not make a difference; for compile-only words, it gives an xt
instead of an error (the intended behaviour). But for words with
arbitrary combinations of interpretation and compilation semantics,
e.g. S", it gives an xt that performs the compilation semantics
instead of the interpretation semantics:
: bills-' COMP' DROP ;
' s" execute bla" type \ outputs "bla"
bills-' s" execute bla" .s \ outputs "<0>"

VFX will give an XT for semi by just ticking it, which answers your specific question. The reason why I ask, is that I'm starting a big project and I want to use VFX. Is there any way to determine if an ANS-Forth compliant system has this bug or not? It is not just semi-colon, but I actually expect every word in the dictionary to have an xt.. I could try ticking every word in the dictionary to see if doing so for any word aborts the system, but this seems rather tedious. I could just assume that anything that WORDS finds must have an xt, but this isn't guaranteed to work. Most likely, the only way to find out if an ANS-Forth compliant system has the bug or not, is to just ask the person who wrote the code --- that would be Stephen Pelc in the case of VFX --- but in the case of Gforth there are a variety of people involved, and it is not clear which ones of them have the authority to say that the bug is there or not. > Section 4.1.2, 5th bullet of the ANS standard states this as an ambiguous condition: - attempting to obtain the execution token, (e.g. with 6.1.0070 ', 6.1.1150 FIND etc) of a definition with undefined interpretation semantics; 6.1.0460 ; First line says: Interpretation: Interpretation semantics for this word are undefined. A system can do what it likes for an ambiguous condition, so Gforth does not have a bug. If a system does return an xt for ; when you tick it, you are lucky but can't rely on it. -- Gerry

>> > > Section 4.1.2, 5th bullet of the ANS standard states this as an > ambiguous condition: > > - attempting to obtain the execution token, (e.g. with 6.1.0070 ', > 6.1.1150 FIND etc) of a definition with undefined interpretation > semantics; > > 6.1.0460 ; First line says: > > Interpretation: Interpretation semantics for this word are undefined. > > A system can do what it likes for an ambiguous condition, so Gforth > does not have a bug. Hugh appears to want the compilation semantics so he can write lots of ' X followed later by COMPILE, . There was a thread many years ago about this; http://www.archivum.info/comp.lang.forth/2008-06/00302/Re-Semantics-%28interpretation-compilation-execution-etc. %29.html In short, don't tick; POSTPONE.

You didn't? I thought that you were the sole programmer at MPE. You have employees? > However, in VFX every word > with a name can be ticked. Well, that simplifies things. I'll just use VFX --- if my program doesn't work on Gforth or some other Forth, I'll leave Gerry to say that my program has a bug and that I'm no good at ANS-Forth --- I can ignore that.

So, if I just use tick, then my program will work under VFX but not Gforth, but if I use your method then my program will work under Gforth but not under VFX. Sooooo, what exactly did the ANS-Forth committee accomplish in 1994?

But don't be ticked off in future if MPE decide to be more strict and release a version of VFX Forth that doesn't permit ticking semicolon - they have every right to do so. > and that I'm no good at ANS-Forth I never said that, I merely pointed out a couple of lines in the standard that had evidently escaped your eagle eyes. -- Gerry
