The thread "Go Forth And Prosper" has gotten quite long and this is a diversion, so I am discussing it here. Perhaps Dirk can explain a bit what the purpose of this board is and why each of the features is important, especially the $4 price tag. I honestly can't think how any board, even as a kit, could be sold for $4. But I just want to hear the basis for the feature set of the board. -- Rick

MSP430G2553 PDIP = $1.00 (1k qty per ti.com)
FTDI cable = $1.00?
PCB = 50 cents, it's small 2-sided through-hole board with big traces,
i.e. cheap
2 leds @ $.10 each
A few other parts, hmm not sure. $0.50?
Especially if you read $4 as 4 euros (original meaning of 4e4th) there
is easily enough margin to make this doable, at least on a non-profit
basis.
I agree I'm not sure of the point of this compared to the Launchpad
board, if a PCB is involved.
I still like the idea of a solderless kit. Just a few chips, wires, and
other parts in a bag, with instructions about where to plug everything
("connect 3 inch yellow wire from slot 23A to slot 17B") into a
solderless breadboard (sold separately). That immediately makes the
hardware more hackable: just rewire stuff as you feel like it. No
add-on boards, just plug more stuff into the same breadboard. The
breadboards run $5-10 depending on size but you can use them for all
sorts of things.
This also makes it possible to use the 40 pin processor with 32k of
program memory, if they put the DIP version in production. With luck
they'll also do that for the closely related part with 56k of flash and
4k of ram, which should be able to run a pretty nice system. I don't
know if that's enough to run a traditional standalone Forth with a block
editor though.
At the other end of the size scale from the 40dip is this:

The S35 are a little outdated meanwhile, but I think the S45 and S60 had the same serial connection (not really sure!) and some Nokia too. But this you have to research by your own.

I am used to do research for my own, and my research ended at the cheapest USB to TTL/CMOS cable at US $1.59, searching for 'usb to serial cable TTL' at eBay, finding 'USB to TTL Serial Cable Adapter PC-PL2303HX Chipset USB Cable Computer Cable TR' More than 10 available / 107 sold, free shipping from Hong Kong. If it seems too good to be true it probably is. I recounted my experience with an eBay vendor who claimed their cable used a prolific chip... but didn't. As far as I can tell the Prolific chips are not literally counterfeited or they would work with the Prolific drivers. Instead they use a similar chip from a Chinese vendor that requires their own driver. I have bought some of these low price cables that did work fine and others that didn't. Some are only supported under older versions of Windows. I don't recommend them at all unless they have been tested by someone you trust. -- Rick

Please provide a link! If you need a serial port cable I can recommend a vendor on eBay. They are the ones who said they were selling a Prolific based cable which turned out to have a Chinese chip in it. But this Chinese chip works just fine and has drives for Windows up through 8. The seller said they were just reporting the specs as given to them by the maker, lol. I wouldn't pay the return shipping, so they gave me a refund and let me keep the cables. I would work with them again and even recommend them as long as you are happy with the Chinese serial cable. I think it was about $6. The chip is identified as CH340 by wch-ic.com and the vendor is ehkseller. It is shipped from the US so is faster delivery for us, I'm not sure where you are, I would expect Germany. Not sure how fast the delivery will be for you. I just looked at their recent listing and they don't claim it is the HXD chip, but they use the CH340 number but with the name Prolific still, lol! I guess they are banking on the fact that it works so not many will complain. -- Rick

> Maybe it's possible to eliminate the FTDI chip and just bit-bang the USB > port in software. I have done the pioneering bit-bang USB assembly code for MSP430 some time ago and two fine minds already evolved it into an USB-Bootloader for MSP430G2553: https://github.com/simpleavr/boot430 But basically, I would definitely go for the FTDI chip as low-speed USB standard doesn't offer a terminal. FTDI chips will work flawlessy across platforms, and you can hook up a FTDI chip in a way it can write the chip over the mask ROM bootloader. This makes the board unbrickable, a very desirable feature: http://goodfet.sourceforge.net/hardware/goodfet42/ For this price it is quite probably that someone has more than one of this small boards. If you like the idea Ledcomm could give a uncommon nice low-cost on board optical link or brightness sensor. Just try out which of the cheap LEDs performs best - it needs to be connected with both anode and cathode to the MSP430, but no other hardware is required. I had my best experiences with bright clear red LEDs, and sometimes yellow ones work too. Keep me in the loop with the (classic, no CPUX) MSP430 board - I am there to help with porting Mecrisp and do pioneering assembly code for it as my contribution. My E-Mail is valid. Suppose I've a binary file with a Forth. Can this boot43 get the Forth into Launchpad over the supplied cable? Or is some extra soldering required? The Launchpad has built-in 3.3 v supply. Why does the boot43 show a schematic of a 3.3v supply? If bit-banging is programmed on the MSP430, surely there must be already a Forth there, so it can't be used to get the Forth in there. <SNIP> > >Best wishes for your project - >Matthias > >PS: Have a look at the MSP430G2955, too !
