I wish to a announce a software defined Loran-C longwave radio navigation receiver running on STM32F407 ! It is written in Forth with pieces of assembler. If you happen to live somewhere on earth with Loran-C signal coverage like Europe and parts of Asia, I would like to get in contact with you for beta testing out in the wild.

The first experimental release is available now on download section on http://mecrisp.sourceforge.net/

Matthias,

As hard as I try to get excited about this, most of the Loran stations in 
North America have been deprecated in favour of GPS technology.  As it 
was, navigation by air in particular by Loran was fraught with problems, 
and ironically, there was a couple of bad regions which overlapped the 
great lakes, with respect to surface navigation by ship.

Still, it is interesting to know that there are places in the world where 
Loran-C remains viable.  I was unaware.

There is a list of Loran-C transmitters on Wikipedia (not sure how up to 
date it is though). See <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LORAN#List_of_LORAN-C_transmitters>.

Might be able to help you out with the UK one (one of my former colleagues 
is involved in the Navigation Society).

Dear Rob,

I think cancellation of Loran-C in North America has mostly been a political decision. 
In Europe development goes on and accuracy improved over the years. See "eLoran" !
I just got this by E-Mail and maybe it is interesting for you:

"I live in the US on the east coast and do on occasion receive LORAN C from
Europe. But we have a new LORAN occasionally here that behaves much as the
old did though its for time and frequency only."

Yes, political.  Sadly, for my use ... irrelevant.  Still, an interesting 
project.
