Interesting stuff, I bought an ebook on 0MQ but have not read it yet, it
looked like an interesting project and was not expensive.

0MQ is free, depending on use.

I actually improved my client's system's performance by 15% by switching
to 0MQ, so it was a significant win despite the pain of debugging.

I thought he meant that the ebook was not expensive. But 0MQ's
documentation seemed ok to me. I never used it but I felt like it was
there if I needed it, without requiring an ebook.

Yes, the eBook by Pieter Hintjens, it was less than $5, I wanted to read
about the concepts in 0MQ before I spent any time trying to unravel it,
but it seems that Ron already did it, now all I have to do is wait for
the next release. Although it might be interesting tointerface it to VFX
Forth.

The current release has the 'net/zmq' library, but there are some
enhancements in the new version.

The zmq project also help me improve the efficiency of 8th's FFI layer
(as well as its feature-set). So it's a good thing, all around.

Ah, so you're correct that he was talking about the book. And you're
also correct that their docs are good. And the sample code is very
informative.

Many years ago I wrote a small multi-tasking mini OS for use in the
company I worked for, we made CNC products. A lot of time was spent in
coming up with a very light messaging system for the various task to
communicate with one another without having major resources used up. Not
only within a CPU but also between the various CPUs used in the
projects. In those days CPUs were kind of wimpy so one had to be efficient.

In the end it worked quite well but it was very specific to the task at
hand, and written in well optimized assembler. Multitasking can be so
much better if there is small overhead to to the robust inter-task
communications routines, which seems what 0MQ is all about.
