A lot of time was spent in coming up with a very light messaging system for the various task to communicate with one another without having major resources used up. Not only within a CPU but also between the various CPUs used in the projects. In those days CPUs were kind of wimpy so one had to be efficient. In the end it worked quite well but it was very specific to the task at hand, and written in well optimized assembler. Multitasking can be so much better if there is small overhead to to the robust inter-task communications routines, which seems what 0MQ is all about. -- Cecil - k5nwa
