It's just going to get worse.

New hybrid corn (maize) varieties are expected to triple the field
density of corn. To harvest rows of such tightly packed plants,
the farmers have to use computerized tractors with satellite
positioning and automated driving.

In the case cited linked to, the real issue is the mis-use of
the DMCA by companies, which prohibits breaking software security
in a mis-guided attempt to stop piracy. The DMCA also legally
prohibits owners of products from fixing of modifying devices
with protected software, which, if one is to believe the
"internet of things" concept, will eventually become everything.
IIRC, even the new Keurig coffee maker has DRM or DMCA protections.

Even scarier is the new U.S. government financed robot that
can survive walking through fires ... If reading that didn't
make you drop a load, you're not paranoid enough. That's right,
the U.S. government just built a robot nearly identical to
the one in the first "Terminator" movie. No joke. It looks
the same too. This is for real people. The official purpose
of this robot is to put out high temperature fires on military
vessels ... I guess government types can rationalize anything.

So, SkyNet is already here!
