Just FYI, 8th uses reference-counting, very successfully. It does, also, use tagged data - so one always knows exactly what kind of thing is on the stack. You can also do something like what OForth does, e.g. play magic with the pointers to the stack items so that the data pointer itself tells you what kind of item is on the stack. That is (in my opinion) a dangerous path, but if used with restraint it works nicely. Having a separate stack for each kind of data (float-stack, string-stack etc) is going to make things complicated for the users of StraightJacketForth, should the day ever arrive when it's released.
