If you write your implementation in a high-level language such as C, you can't rely on the internal pointer representation if you want to be portable to all present, past, and future targets. However, if you only take into account those that are in use now and the forseeable future, you should be quite safe assuming pointers are linear byte indexes into memory. From a practical standpoint, it doesn't seem that dangerous. But sure, if you want 100% portability, stay away from pointer tricks.
