I used to treat Hugh like a rational person.  But eventually I realized 
that he was never going to respond to reason.  People develop neurosis 
and phobias, neither of which are rational and neither of which listen 
to reason.  Few if any of us are immune to having these, but often they 
aren't so debilitating.

In some areas Hugh is fairly rational.  Clearly he knows quite a bit 
about Forth and can think about it rationally... to a point.  But there 
is a certain level of paranoia or something that is triggered when he 
confronts an issue with the language he doesn't appreciate.  He then 
turns to conspiracy theories centered around Ms. Conklin (aka Ms. 
Rather) as the central villain.  You could say in Hugh's mind she is 
Moriarty and Hugh is Sherlock Holmes.

Yes, I expect Hugh's self image is very much like that, a Sherlock 
Holmes sleuthing his way through the mysteries of Forth seeking the 
villains who have tortured and perverted it into its present form.
