As we see with this MSP430 Eforth book, someone did that anyway, so the
Kindle format was of no help in preventing it.

I'm not aware of a FOSS Kindle reading program.  That would defeat the
already-defeated purpose of the Kindle copy protection.

They are all closed source as far as I know.  

I've bought a number of plain pdf ebooks from Wrox and others, and
there's never been a problem.  They do fine selling them without copy
protection.  So I'm happy to not use a Kindle.
