If one wants to add 3 to the integer value of "4", or append the string representation of 4 to the string "3", one would write 3+int(4) or "3"+str(4), respectively. That's a reasonably nice way to handle overloading, since operators work consistently in all cases where they work without error. Javascript, by contrast, is more loosy-goosy, and will try to guess what "5"+4 or "7"-2 should mean; in the former case it will decide that since there is an overload of "+" for strings, it should convert the value 4 to a string, while in the latter case it will decide that since there is no overload of "-" for strings, but there is one for numbers, it should convert "7" to a number.

The 'explicit casts' was for my benefit, as I use 'casts' to more loosely mean a conversion that is either added internally by a compiler, or that is applied in source code by the programmer. The latter would be explicit. (I also call them 'hard' and 'soft' conversions, 'hard' being explicit. With a hard conversion, the compiler will try and go along with what the programmer requests, unless it is completely nonsensical.) Why not just call them conversions? What's the benefit of borrowing a
technical term ("cast") with another meaning and using it a way that is
already well described by a plain English word? It just seems to be
part of plan to be make programming sounds as confusing as possible.

'Cast' is shorter than 'conversion' or 'coercion'?

The plan seemed more to nitpick any of my posts!
[If you want 'confusing', in my language there is also a kind of cast
where the programmer doesn't specify the type: A = cast(B); here
whatever type conversion is needed is applied. So the cast is
semi-explicit, while the word 'cast' is used more explicitly than it
would be in C.]

I like to use the phrase "explicit cast" in cases where casts are intended
to explicitly indicate, to "anything" reading the code (compiler or human),
that something "unusual" may be going on. Consider the code:
float f1,f2;
double d1,d2;
// Assign values to f1,f2 somehow...
d1 = f1*f2;
d2 = (float)(f1*f2);
While saying that (f1*f2) is explicitly cast to "float" (rather than merely
saying that it's "cast") might nominally be redundant, I think it would make
clearer the intention that something "unusual" may be going on. In the
absence of the cast, some implementations store in d1 a value of type "float"
which holds a value that isn't representable in that type. Adding the cast
before the assignment to d2 would make explicit a desire *not* to have such
a value stored in d2.

Remember, some people reading the C standards are doing so for the first time, and some people reading articles or Usenet posts about C do not have decades of experience in C terminology details - it does no harm to write "explicit cast" on occasion, especially in contrast to implicit conversions. There is enough confusion about terms in this thread. Surely we can live with a little redundancy - it is a step up from a lot of inaccuracy!

The C90, C99, and C11 editions of the standard all use that phrase.
(In C90 it's under Semantics; in C99 and C11 it's under Constraints.)
> I wonder what they could possibly mean?
It means the same thing as "cast". Presumably the authors chose
to add the redundant word "explicit" for emphasis. I probably
wouldn't have done so, but it's not wrong.
Do you think that "explicit cast" means something different from
"cast", in that context or any other C context? If so, what?
For that matter, I'm fairly sure the entire sentence:
Conversions that involve pointers, other than where permitted
by the constraints of 6.5.16.1, shall be specified by means of
an explicit cast.
is redundant, since it's already covered by the constraints on simple
assignment (which also apply to parameter passing, initialization,
and return statements). A little redundancy isn't necessarily
a bad thing (the C standard is not an entirely formal document),
but in my opinion that particular sentence should be a footnote.
My guess is that that wording was added to emphasize a change in the
language. Looking back at the 1974 and 1975 versions of the C manual,
I'm a bit surprised to see that the language didn't have a cast
operator. K&R1 (1978) did, but it's not clear that a cast was required
for pointer conversions.
In old C, it was common to see things like
char *ptr = 0xDEADBEEF;
or, more likely for the PDP-11:
char *ptr = 0177770;
to allow references to a specific memory address. I think the wording
was added to emphasize that things like that were no longer valid.
